Calling all Les Mills Certified Instructors..

I am considering getting certified to teach Body Pump and Body Flow.  I looked online to learn about the process and am really interesting in getting your input.

What does the certification/training class look like?  Is it a few days?

When they say you have to video your class and submit, can you video you teaching at home, or do you have to video at an actual gym?

Any helpful tips or insight is appreciated!

Thanks!

Re: Calling all Les Mills Certified Instructors..

  • Hey there!  I am a BodyCombat instructor.  I was certified about 5 years ago and I know some things have changed since then...  The training used to be three consecutive days, but I believe they are converting them all to two days.  First you have to get a gym/health club to "sponsor" you, or whatever their term is for it.  Then you sign up for an initial training near you.  I think now they mail you the current release before the training for you to familiarize yourself with it.  During the training, one thing you will have to do is memorize and teach an assigned track to a small group of other trainees.  You're evaluated on that, in addition to your performance during the entire two days.  When I did it, they gave you a pass, fail, or something in between where you have to get your group fitness director to sign off on your competency, lol.  Then you "team teach" a few tracks a time in a certified instructor's class for practice.  Once you're ready, and your GF director allows it, you take over a class and start filming your video.  Unless things have changed, you must be teaching real participants (at least 5) in a real group ex setting.  You send in your video for them to evaluate on all the components you learned in training.  I remember it being one of the most challenging things I've ever done, but I am SO glad I did!  I love teaching BC and would love to get certified in other classes one day.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.  GL!

I'm certified in Bodypump and Bodycombat.  My trainings were both 3 days long (three LONG days. . . 9 hours each), but I believe trainings are all being converted to 2 days. . . or may already be there.  Because of that, you may receive your materials early and be expected to do some sort of preparation before hand.

You will present 2 different tracks during your training.  You will either "pass" "pass withheld" or "resit" the training.  If you are asked to resit, you won't pay the fee to take the training again.  "Pass withheld" just means you have some elements to work on (with other instructors at your gym) before you are signed off on the training.  The trainings are intense, both mentally and physically.  Be prepared for that.  Eliminate all other distractions for your training days.

Within 3 months, you will have to submit a video of you teaching the entire class.  You can get a group of friends together in the gym space or teach a class in your sponsoring gym.  You will receive a "pass" "pass withheld" or "resubmit" on your video.

They really want people to succeed, but also want quality instructors, so that's why the training and evaluation is set up the way it is.

Good luck!  It has opened up great things in my life.
