If you and your DH are both tall

Are you kids in a high percentage for height?

I am about 5' 10.5" and my DH is about  6' 1.5". My brother and dad are both 6' 6," and both my mom and dad have very tall siblings. DH's dad is about average and his mom is about 5' 9".

With so many very tall genes, I'd expect my children to be very tall, but at this point James (age 3) and Ben (age 18 months) are only in the 75th and 65th percentiles for height, respectively. Above average, yes, but VERY tall, no. (my height puts me in the 99th percentile for women). I know they are just little, but they say you can predict adult height by doubling height at age 2. That would make James a 6 foot tall adult, if true. Again, above average but not VERY tall for a man.

Just wondering what others have noticed for their kids. I know that scientifically there is an extremely strong correlation between the height of the parents and their offspring, so I just expected (okay, kind of hoped) that my boys would tower over me someday.

Re: If you and your DH are both tall

  • I'm not sure what ther data say about this relationship...you might want to look this up on Google Scholar and see what you find.

DH and I are both 5'10...so I'm tall for a woman and he's pretty average for men.  DD is in the 99th percentile for height (and has been since birth) and in the 80-something percentile for weight.  She was 22 1/2 inches long at birth and weighed 9lbs. 3oz...so she seems to be taking after me.

  • While your family is very tall, it would seem that your DH inherited some tall but not necessarily very tall genes.  That said, in my DH's family, there are tall genes on his mother's side but not his father's.  They are about the same height to each other.  Dh is taller than his parents, but not very tall, and his sister is actually shorter than both parents.  I think that was the first time I had seen a child who didn't exceed at least one parent's height.  Dh was told based on age 2 height that he would be 6'2".  I think he's 5'7".

  • We're the same heights as you and your DH (exactly!) and DD is 95% in height.  Like you I would be surprised if our kids weren't tall.

  • My baby's not here just yet, but my mom and dad are both tall. Dad's 6'1 and mom's 5'9, and when I was little I was in the 99th% straight up through when I can actually remember her being told that. They said I was definitely going to be at least 6 ft and I ended up 5'10. Still tall for a girl, but not crazily so. I think those charts are a decent predictor, but far from perfect.

  • I am 5 10.5" and MH is 6'6".  There is nobody on either side of our family under 5'8".

The girls were just measured at 36" (not sure how accurate that was) at 97% at their 2 year appt.

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

  • I'm 6'1 my husband is 6 feet even.  Our daughter was in the 97th %ile.  Now she's off the charts.

  • I am 5'11' and DH is 6'3".  Reagan is currently in the 90th percentile and at her 3 year appt. the pedi predicted that she would be 5'8".  Madilynn is a different story altogether.  At her 9month appt. she was less than 10% for height!  I am excited to see what we learn at her one year appt.

  • Dang, so it looks like I'm the only one. Well, I can hope for a combo of the charts not being complete predictors and the fact that my kids wiggle and whine and don't want to get measured as perhaps skewing their numbers. It also makes me worry because James is not a good eater, and even though the pedi says he's doing fine (gained 2 lbs from age 2 to 3-- low normal and he's in the 20th percentile), I just worry that maybe he's not growing to his full potential.

Of course I will be happy whatever height they are, but I just always assumed they'd turn out really tall!

  • I'm 5'10 if my spine was straight (severe scoliosis) and D is about 5'11 and shrinking, lol.  Ava's always been 90th+ % on height. Tall and skinny.

MY parents and D's parents are both average height, moms about 5'7'ish, Dads are 5'10 or so. BUT, my mom's brothers are all tall'ish (6 ft or so) and D's maternal g-pop was about 6 ft back in the day.

I'm mostly Irish (hence the shorter ones on my paternal side) and scandahoovian. D is german and scandy.

FWIW, my spine docs put great faith in that "double their 2nd bday height" thing if they have "normal" growth and development.

same here. i'm 5'11" and DH is 6'5". my dad is 6'6" and DS is the spitting image of my dad. DS has been above the 99% for height since he was less than one, and he's a 32 weeker. DD has been above 90% since birth.

  • I'm 5'9" and DH is just over 6' my parents are tall, his are average and DS is in the 20th % however he had an undiagnosed allergy for a while that caused FTT so he's slowly making up this height (he was off the charts)...if he's short, he's short but it is kind of weird considering family size.

  • I am 5'8'' and H is 6'3".  DS1 is in the 95th percentile at 5 years-old now Indifferent.  I expect him to be towering over me when he is a teenager.  As for J&L, they are both in the 65th percentile for height right now but I don't put much stock in the measurements at this age yet.  We will have to wait and see on them.  I am assuming they will both be on the tall side though.

  • I am 6'3" and my husband is 6'6".  I'd bet a dollar that we'd win a "who is the tallest couple on thebump contest".  My boys (thank goodness I have boys and not girls((it was hard being a 6 foot 11 year old)) were both 75th percentile for weight and 97th percentile for height at their 18 month appt.  I wouldn't be surprised if they were off the charts at their 2 year appt.

I know how you feel!  I'm not tall, but DH and his family are...so I really hope that somehow DS ends up taking after DH's side...but he's been around the 50% for height.
