Potty Training

How did you know your toddler was ready to PT?

DH wants DS1 to be potty trained by the time DS2 is born in April.  DS1 is just over 2yo, and has gotten pretty good at pooping on the potty most of the time, but only pees right before bath or bedtime.  I worry that he's not ready, because he's not always forthcoming about having to "go" and still can't pull his pants down himself, not to mention pulling them back up.  How did you determine that your toddler was ready?  Are we unrealistic to potty train him soon?

  • This is what was told to us by our ped.

Bladder control @ naptime or throughout the day. Meaning he or she is dry for at least 2 hours.

Climb, talk, remove clothing, & have mastered other basics skills, ie pulling & down his or her pull up, dressing with lil or no help.

Also to big one he stressed that the child MUST be on board. Some parents want to potty train a child before they are physically & emotionally ready. So he suggested before you actually start you begin by talking up potty training. Like, "Big Boys or Girls use the potty, or do you want to wear Big Boys underwear, like daddy or older sibling".

Some kids take to that, my son could care less. So when he did show any interest we just left it alone for a few months. And started all over again, and he was on board. All kids are different. Wish u best of Luck..

I strongly disagree with this.  DS is 100% trained now (he's even staying dry at night) yet he still can't - or won't - dress or undress at all.  He won't even pull his underwear and pants down to potty unless we really force him to and even then he needs help.  And he won't pull them back up either.  He was showing signs of readiness as soon as he turned 2, but dressing and undressing definately wasn't one of them.

There's a really good section on readiness in "The Everything Potty Training Book" by Linda Sonna, which I always recommend. Not only does it give signs of when your child is ready, but some simple, non-pushy ways to help increase readiness with LO.

My sister swears by that book!
