Question for Photog Mamas

Who has worked with Adobe Photoshop Lightroom?  How user friendly is it?  I found an amazing deal for Lightroom 3, and the deal ends today.

Re: Question for Photog Mamas

  • I like it for certain things but not others (I also use CS5). Have you looked into photoshop elements? I have friends that love it. Seems to combine the best parts of photoshop and LR and is user friendly.

  • I haven't looked in to elements.  I will do that!  Thanks for the tip.  I want something to make my photos fancy, but I don't want something that will put me in over my head.

  • I use LR for most of my editing and I really like it. I think that the main benefit that it has over Elements is that you can batch edit photos. For example, if you take a bunch of photos in the same area within the same lighting, you can make adjustments on one photo and then easily apply those changes to all of the photos at once (rather than having to apply the adjustments to each photo individually). This is my understanding. I haven't used Elements so they may have come up with some batch editing options that I'm not aware of.

As to your question about using the software, it does take some time to learn how to use. There are videos on Adobe TV that you can watch.  I probably learned the basics of how to use it in a few hours. I definitely don't use all of the capabilities but I like it for doing simple things like adjusting the White Balance, Exposure, the Blacks, Cropping, sharpening, etc.

  • I also recommend Corel, if you are open to non-photoshop options

  • I use LR3 for 95% of my editing, and it is also where I organize all my images.  I would say it is user-friendly, but not as much so as consumer-geared software such as picasa or picnik.  It does have a learning curve in the beginning, like most Adobe programs.  Also, there are many online resources for tutorials.  I only use PS when necessary for a few processes that can't be done in LR.  I saw that offer today and it is a fantastic deal IMO.  I would recommend purchasing LR over PS or PSE for primary editing and organization.
