NBR: point-and-shoot camera recs?

We have a nice Nikon D40 but I want something I can toss in my purse, diaper bag, or even pocket.  I want to catch more "everyday" moments, like at playgrounds, but adding a bulky camera bag to all the other stuff I'm hauling (including three kids) means I don't go to the trouble.

DH's dad was a professional photographer and swore by Nikon, so DH said to stick with that...but I'm finding better reviews for other brands.  I'm looking for something small, that takes decent pictures (for important stuff we'll bring the "good" camera), is easy to operate, and ideally has video capabilities.  Preferably under $150.  Thanks for any help.

  • I just got a Samsung 5x for Xmas.  I think it is around $100 on amazon.  So far I have been pleased.

  • I recently upgraded my P&S to the Canon 300 HS.  Super small, 12 MP, has a lot of features.  DH got it before Christmas for $129 but I think it's selling for just over $150 these days.  I also have a Nikon D3000 but this is my 3rd Canon P&S (upgrades, nothing wrong with the cameras).  I've been really happy with the pictures it takes, even in low light.
  • And it also takes 1080p HD video.
  • I have a Cannon Power Shot Elph as my point-and shoot. It's pretty small, and takes really great, no-fuss pictures, IMO. (my photog sister swears by anything cannon... but every photographer will have their favorite)
