C-Section vs Vaginal Birth

Just read about a recent study presented at a Maternal/Fetal health conference in Dallas earlier this week that vaginal birth may actually be less risky than c-section for premature delivery.  I'm sorta surprised given the stress of a vaginal birth, but the stats show the risks to be the same, and even better results for respiratory distress syndrome.  Anyway, here's the article:

  • That's why my institution tries to allow for vaginal birth if possible. It made for several stressful minutes as he decel'ed at the end though!

  • I found the information to be very vague - at least in my situation - the doctors were positive that she would not survive a vaginal birth - my internal incision is also a vertical incision because the surgeon felt it was best for baby - she was still badly bruised from being pulled out - she was so fragile at 22 weeks there was no way she would have made it through the birth canal - her skin would have ripped off - Im very happy that I chose the c-section - even though it changed my ability to ever have a VBAC or full term pregnancy again.  At that time I trusted completely that the doctors would do whatever was best for baby

This.  and I delivered my 26-weeker vaginally.

  • I am not surprised by this study at all. I ended up with a c-section and had no choice (I was hemorrhaging, my water had broken and I was not even a fingertip dilated...I would have been dead before they pulled her out of me if I tried to deliver vaginally), but I have heard a vaginal birth may be less stressful. My nephew was born with a MAJOR heart defect, and required three open heart surgeries before he was a week old, and they docs told my SIL that a vaginal birth would be less stress on his heart than a c section.
  • my son who was born at 35w3d was a vbac, they told he might have to be on oxygen for a while.  his breathing was that of a term baby never needed anything, he did have feeding problems, jawdess but i attribute this to vbac when you labor hormones are released to help the baby.
