C-sections

MRSA

Hi,

4 weeks after dd was born, I was diagnosed with mrsa on my foot.  i had to be on meds and could not bf for 10 days.  dd is now 5 months and i had what i thought was a spider bite on my back.  doc thinks it's mrsa and has prescribed meds.  she told me not to bf while on.  i'm so distraught.  i love bf-ing.  dd won't take a bottle and last time the formula really tore her up.  idk what to do.  i had a csection and moved into a new apt within a week.  i think it came from the apt.  of couese the complex denies it.  has anyone else had mrsa and could you bf?  just wondering

Re: MRSA

  • The question isn't whether you can BF with MRSA, it is whether or not the medication you are on for it is 1. dangerous for LO and 2. transferrable through your milk.  If your doctor said no, I would assume that you shouldn't take it, but you can always call your local pharmacist and ask their advice, or check this list: https://www.kellymom.com/health/meds/aap-approved-meds.html

  • I got MRSA after my 3rd c/s. It was horrible. I was hospitalized for 2 weeks, not allowed to see my 3 children or husband, and couldn't bf for 4 weeks. If it makes you feel better I pumped the whole time and we are exclusively bf now.

Honestly it doesn't really matter where you got the MRSA b/c you could pick it up anywhere. It's found on 30% of everything everywhere. The problem is that after having a baby you're at such a low immunity your body can't fight it, where as a normal healthy young person can.

One thing that stands out to me is that your dr didn't swab for the MRSA. Can you make her do that?

Hang in there! Feel better soon!
