MoCo Swim lessons - pre-beginner

Has anyone done the pre-beginner lessons with no parent in the water?  Maggie is 4.5 and has not had a swim lesson since she was an infant (when we went for fun, not really learning).  I want to put both Maggie and Molly in a lesson at the same time but there are no parent attending lessons at the same time for their two age groups (18mo-3yrs for Molly and 4-6years for Maggie) when DH and I could each take one.  SO I am thinking about putting Maggie in the no parent lesson (she has done this for other things like gymnastics but not the water) while one of us watches Maggie in her lesson the other could take Molly to her lesson.  The no parent class is limited to 5 students, but I am just worried about Maggie and was wondering how anyone else's kid handled it.  The other option is for each of us to take a kid at separate times - not ideal since it's not like we live right next door to any of the aquatic centers.

  • hmmm, I have no idea about the actual class, but is she pretty comfortable in the water and willing to try new things?  I generally disliked water deeper than my knees and so I think it would probably have been a disaster if I had to take a lesson by myself.

Do they offer any kind of refund or credit if she doesn't take to the no parent lesson well?

Maybe you could try calling to see if they could work with you at all or put you on a waitlist for the parent assisted classes seeing as how she's on the younger side of the class age range?

  • Thanks for responding.  I signed her up for the on her own classes since I posted on another bigger board and everyone's 4yo's are taking classes by themselves.  I introduced the idea to her this morning and she had some concerns but I am hoping it will be so fun and the other kids being there will help her feel comfortable.

If it doesn't work out I know the rec department would help us to change classes as long as there is availability.

  • I used to teach lessons for 4-6 year olds that were similar to this (through my summer swim club).  For most kids, it was a great age to learn though the younger ones certainly developed at a slower pace than the older ones in the same group.  Everyone got to the same safety levels though (knowing how to breathe out underway, efficiently float, etc) and that was just in a few weeks so I'm sure you DD will be great.
