Baby Names

Fresh Names

I'm been searching baby names for weeks and I feel like I'm reading the same lists over and over and I don't love any of them! Where did you find the name you chose?

Re: Fresh Names

  • I felt the same way. I was using Nymbler and the same results kept coming up. About a month before my due date my son's name popped up and I knew right then, that was the name. So frustrating to wait and wait and wait though!
  • I like babynamesworld.com and going onto the social security website top 1000 seach, but going back several years instead of what has been popular and common recently.

  • They just jump out at me at random times.

Like Gwendolyn, I've recently taken a huge liking to this name, and I heard it called out once in a commerical, and boom. Cupid's arrow.

  • 80% of the names on my list are from family (I do Genealogy as a hobby). The rest have come from this name board, books, TV and movies.

  • DS1 - Found name in The Baby Name Wizard while going through it with my husband. I highly recommend this book - it gives "sibling suggestions" for each name that have a similar feel but you may not have considered.

DS2 - Submitted my naming conundrum to Swistle (you should read this blog, if you don't already!) and his name was suggested in one of the comments. Swistle is awesome.

Nymbler is always fun for getting new ideas. I also read a few different name blogs. You'll find it eventually!

  • Thank you! Maybe I should just sit back and let the name come to me. Take deep breaths! Ha.

  • I've gotten tons of ideas from here, as well as from other naming websites (headed up by the YCCII archives).

However, our current top choice girl's name is from a movie we both love, and our top choice boy's name is from a novel.

  • I had the best results looking for names by voting in name polls on babynames.com and the bump. I also found some names I hadn't thought of in articles on babynames.com and the bump. Nymbler and nameberry helped me in my search also and of course, this board. Smile
  • Our names came from family and personal experience.  Our son's first name was my dear and darling grandfather's name, and his middle name is the last name of the couple that introduced MH and myself.  (Charles Stewart)

The first name that I'm loving for our theoretical fantasy daughter is both the name of my dog growing up, and also the first name of my alma mater. (Sophie) It's also a nickname name, and my full first name is a nickname name (Abbey), so I think that's cool.

The middle name we like for a theoretical daughter is a version of my MIL's name. MIL doesn't even like her name, but MH would like to honor his side of the family with our second child, and we found a way to do that, but not use the actual name.  (Vivienne)

  • Aside from the normal blogs and books  I thought it was fun to actually watch the credits at the end of movies!  Tons of names there...

Also we always looked to literature/artists for inspiration..
