Cloth Diapering

How to tell when their diapers are too small?

Okay, I know this sounds like a stupid question, but how do you tell when your child has grown out of a diaper, or when it's time to increase the rise on a OS?  My daughter has very "responsive" skin, so finding red marks at the waist or thighs doesn't necessarily mean the elastics are too tight.  Are their certain characteristics about how the diaper sits at the waist or fastens, or if it leaks in certain places that are signs of it becoming too small?

I know it should be obvious to me whether or not something fits, but I love these diapers and want to be able to maximize usage without compromising my daughter's comfort and hygiene.

 Thanks for the help!

  • When you see cheeks, or you get weird leaks (or they just don't go on in a way that looks right).  If it's a OS diaper, you can just try sizing up and seeing if that seems to fit better.  I don't think there's a particular method for this, though.

  • Thanks - I've seen cheeks on some of my newborn diapers.  That's a good visual.  Eventually I will get better at this fit thing.  I'm still having trouble knowing whether I'm making my diapers too tight or too loose . . . but I'm sure it will all fall into place with time!

  • I don't think it's a stupid question at all.  When I started thinking that the NB diapers looked a little small (mostly, the rise seemed really low), I tried OS and they fit, so I gradually switched over to those over a few day period.
