Iron supplements

Hi ladies,

I got a letter (grrr, not a phone call) from my OB stating that my iron count was low from my last round of blood work. They would like me to take an iron supplement two times a day. I know it's very common during pregnancy so I'm ok with taking it, but wanted to see if anyone here had a routine that worked for them if they had to take it? I also take my prenatal, a baby aspirin, and 200 mg of Colace everyday.

Thanks!

Re: Iron supplements

  • Last pregnancy I was taking iron supplements, but this pregnancy, I lucked out I guess. I took my iron in the morning, then my prenatal at night.

  • I only take 1 iron supplement a day (not 2) in addition to my prenatal.  I take all my pills at the same time, right before bed.  Iron can tend to bind you up, so you may want to consider adding a fiber supplement!

One thing to note, calcium inhibits your bodies ability to absorb iron, so don't take the iron supplement along with anything calcium based...  that includes TUMS!

  • I just took it right alone with my prenatal.  I never had a reaction to my prenatals or the iron supplements and was able to take them just fine.

And ditto the calcium thing. Just make sure you're not taking it with a big thing of milk and you'll be fine.

  • I had to add iron when I was pg w/ DS.  My OB recommended SlowFE (can be found at drugstores, Walmart, Target, etc) and it worked fine.  I was already taking my prenatal + fiber capsules, so when I added the SlowFE, I also added in Colace.
