How do you cook tofu? (Dumb I know)

I've never prepared it myself, but H seems to like it (DH gets a dish with it at an asian restaurant and she'll gobble it up). I bought a package of firm tofu at the store but have NO idea what to do beyond removing it from the package. How do I prepare it? Cook it? Do I need to season it or use marinade, etc.?

Help!

  • I'm not super well-versed in it, but you don't have to cook it.  That said, if you don't then it doesn't really taste like much.  Personally I like it stir fried with some veggies and maybe some soy sauce and sesame oil as long as H isn't allergic to either of those things.  I kind of think of it like you would chicken, if that makes sense.  If you get the softer version, you can easily mix it in to smoothies.

  • I used to make it for MH when he was on the fat smash diet. I would just sautee it in a pan & season it till it was crispy on the edges. We'd get the extra firm kind.

  • Ditto PPs.  I think you can just saute it with whatever seasonings H would like.  You don't have to cook it either, but it is very plain.

That being said, DS loves him some plain tofu, so we just give it to him in cubes.  Sometimes we roll it in crushed Cheerios, crushed puffs, or wheat germ.  He happily eats it that way.  We use firm or extra firm, whatever is on sale.

  • Ok, I think I can handle this. :) So just dump it out of the liquid in the package and either slice and serve or fry it up in a pan. No rinsing? (This shouldn't be so hard, I don't know what my deal is today!)
