While I would never get one personally, I don't see an issue. Just this weekend a high school friend of mine got one on her lower back... flowers and the names of her sons.
I would think at our "advanced age," it is something you would probably consider more carefully than someone who does it very spur-of-the-moment. I know several people who got them when they were young and wished they'd thought about it a little more before making their choice of decoration.
And make sure it's not tacky and don't cheap out! Nothing uglier than a really badly done tattoo. I saw some old lady (really old.. not our age old) with a halter top on and tattoos I can only guess they were likenesses of her children or grandchilden's faces on her shoulder. They looked like goblins. And yeah, it was at Walmart!

I am still putting together my tattoo in my head, at 43. I second the advice of going to a reputable place and paying decent money for a tattoo, hate to spend a little money on it, and then a lot of money later on getting rid of it!

I plan on getting one when we are done having kids (hopefully we will be having another). I plan on getting the birth month flowers for each of them with their names written in script that somehow make up the stems of the flowers.
My DH has 13 of them, and got a lot of them while he was quite young. While I am not a big fan of some of them, he got them done in different places he was stationed while he was in the army, so they have some special meaning to him. The only one he regrets is a sort of tribal one.....he got it across his low back years before the 'tramp stamp' came to be. So I do tease him about that one a lot...lol
I got my first tattoo when I was 34. I had Preston's astrology sign with a P in the middle of it on the top of my left foot. I just recently had one done of Harrison's astrology sign with an H in the middle of it on the inside of my right ankle. Eventually, I would like their names scripted as well.
I think it's lame to pay money for a gawd awful tatoo in an embarrassing place. Age isn't a factor for me. Now, a really kick butt tatoo that won't embarrass the grandkids (too much anyway) is totally fine. I still haven't figured out mine.
My sister and her DH got them a few years ago - they are both in their mid 40's. My BIL got my sisters name and his 3 kids name written along with a Chinese saying (2 of the kids are adopted from China). My sister has a red string around her ankle.
Absolutely not lame! As long as it has special meaning to you, go for it. I still plan on getting my kids' initials inked our ancient script added to my tattoos.

Yeah, if you were asking about a "California license plate", hmm, might have to say that's lame. Or doing like my one of my brothers did--having his last name tattooed across his back so he can play hockey sweaterless (I hope he was joking), yeah, kinda lame. Something that has meaning for you, not lame at all.
My mom will be 59 this year. She was 56 when she was diagnosed with colon cancer; she underwent surgeries, had to wear a colostomy bag for a bit, and underwent chemo treatments before & after surgery. She was 57 when she given a clean bill of health. When she reached her anniversary of her clean bill of health last year (at age 58), she celebrated by getting a tattoo.
When she was undergoing her chemo treatments, my middle brother had "LIVESTRONG" tattooed on his inner wrist, for my mom.
I want a tattoo, but it's kind of lame: I want a small Mickey Mouse head silhouette tattooed right below my shoulder. Just because I like Disney, and I can refer to that tattoo as a "hidden Mickey" since so few people would see it, other than myself & MH.
My SIL is a tattoo artist and she told me that the older you are when you get a tattoo, the clearer and cleaner looking it stays. If you get one at age 20, you'll need to get it touched up every 5 years. But at age 40 it will always look nice because your skin changes less.
Re: Do you think getting a tattoo after the age of 30 is lame?
