Preemies

How Does Your Preemie Grow?

I have had two very generous baby showers and now have about 30-35 outfits in the 0-3 months size.  I know that we can't predict how much LO will grow and when.  Based on your preemies experience, how long was the 0-3 months size appropriate?  Would you exchange a number of outfits for a larger size?

A little background, LO was 2lb, 10 oz at birth and at eight weeks, she has outgrown preemies sized sleepers, due to her long legs.  She is wearing the newborn size and weighs 5lb, 9oz.

Thanks in advance for your replies!

  • I found that some 0-3 months stuff fit up to 10-12 pounds.  The biggest issue on some of them were length.  I would look at the shorter ones and thin about exchanging them.

  • My son was in the 0-3 month size for a while.  I am also glad I had some newborn sized clothes although he did outgrow those quickly.  My son was 7 lb 4 oz when he came home on his due date and was already in a Size 1 diaper- but still in NB clothes for at least a month.

  • Owen's already in 6-12 month stuff but for his actual age of 4.5 months he's off the charts at 27.5 inches and 18lb8oz.  I find that the clothes without feet can be used a lot longer than the ones with feet and socks are not too much of pain (mind you he hasn't "found his feet" yet).

If you can I'd at least exchange some outfits for short sleeve onsies so they can be worn underneath sleepers if it's cold out or by themselves if the weather is warm.

  • I'd keep your favs and exchange the rest. babies just don't need that many clothes :)

Our DDs are very thin and about average for length and outgrew NB around 9.5 lbs (really a length issue). They wore NB to about 2 mo adjusted and 0-3 for another 3 mo, but they're barely around 5th percentile for weight.

  • Henry moved to 0-3month around 8.5 lbs (2-3 wks adj) and is now out of pants and one piece, but can wear some onesies still, he's nearing 15lbs now. I'd exchange for some 3-6, you can even get the same outfits.

  • He was in preemie stuff for about 6 weeks after he came home (plus about 2-3 in the hospital), then 0-3 for about 8-10 weeks, 3-6 for about 10-12 weeks, and is now in 6-9 and has been for a few weeks.

However, Gabe was a shortie. So, take this with a grain of salt :)

  • My peanut was 3lbs 12ozs and 17 1/4 inches long.  He wore preemie until he was about a month old because the sleepers became short.  He then wore Newborn for a good two months, 0-3 for a good two or three months, etc.  I'd say, except for preemie, he's stayed in every size for at least two months.  He's 8 months and lots of 6 month clothing still fits him.  I kind of flip flopped the clothing sizes - ie he STARTED wearing 3 months when he was 3 or 4 months (whereas a 3 month size implies up to 3 month) and wore that until he was 6 months when he began wearing some 6 month, etc.  The 0-3, 3-6 etc run a little smaller than 3 month, 6 month etc and I find them to be good transition pieces.  Like right now, LO is almost too big for 6 months, but 9 months would swamp him - so I've started buying some 6-9.

  • At 7 months my boys can still wear most 0-3 month sizes.  They were 2lbs and 2.7lbs at birth.  Now they weigh about 11 and 12 lbs.  We were in NB size forever!  I don't know where you live but, it would depend what season the clothing is for.  Where I live, we only have about 3-4 months of coldish weather.  I think you can expect her to fit in 0-3 for at least a couple more months if not longer.

  • I think we could fit into 0-3 months until at least 6 months if not longer.  I have a short guy, still less than 1% at 17 months, so clothes always last us forever.

I liked having a ton of outfits since we were "stuck" in the same size forever, I got bored of his clothes and I liked being about to rotate.  Plus I only like to do laundry every week or two so it's nice to have enough clothes to circulate without worrying about running out of clothes.

At 17 months we are still wearing 6-9 month pants and 12 month shirts.  My son was 4 lb 13 oz when he was born and is probably about 22.5 pounds now and maybe 29".

  • My LO was 2lbs 11 oz at birth and came home at 8 weeks 5lbs 14oz...so pretty comparable to your LO. Granted, my LO has reflux and has slow but steady weight gain and she just hit 14lbs at 9 months. She's in clothes for A LONG TIME. She's in 3-6 month stuff now and she has been in those since Christmas (about 12.5lbs). She also moved up to a size 2 diaper at that time.

She was in Newborn clothes when she came home in June until about September and then 0-3 from mid September til the end of December. It seems as though she will be in the 3-6 month for a while longer too. I'm hoping she will be in 6-9 months by the Spring/Summer because that's what I've been buying her!

You should definitely keep your favorites and if you feel like it's just too much, exchange them for bigger sizes or sleepers or something. :)
