Ahhh wedding help!

Yes I know I am on the wrong board but I am much more comfortable on this board and this is not your normal wedding.  So real quick background and some of you know.  I had an awful first marriage but have a wonderful 3 yr old.  Have been dating a great guy for 7 months who I pretty much knew right away I wanted to marry.  He is also divorced and had an awful first marriage and has a 4 year old.  So Friday night out of nowhere I was surprised with a fabulous wedding proposal that I had no idea was coming and a gorgeous ring.   I am so incredibly happy!!!  So the plan is to have something very small here, maybe 40 people including children.  We basically want to get married by a minister or whoever (we have no clue because we are both Catholic but can't be married in the Catholic church again) and then just do a dinner somewhere nice in a private room because of the kids so they can kinda do their thing without interrupting the whole restaurant.

Any ideas on where to get married, ministers and restaurants?  we are thinking May so soon!!!  I am not from here so I feel very overwhelmed about this.

  • Shoreline grill in downtown has a beautiful view but I don't know much else about it.

Chez Zee in Balcones has a little room you can rent and the desserts are delicious.

  • Congrats!!

My DH's company has work dinners for 40-60 peeps all the time and their go-to is Maggianos.  They have several bigger, separate rooms, I think.

  • I was going to suggest Maggianos too... good family (read kid friendly) food, quiet room off to yourself with fantastic atmosphere.  Not sure how much their rentals are but their dinner prices are good.  Or you could do someplace like Iron Cactus or North by Northwest.

As far as getting married we used a judge... short, simple, to the point.  Although my husband's catholic grandmother swears we are not really married.  What about doing it in a park somewhere?

A friend told me just the other day that Shoreline just closed for good.

  • Page austxgrl! She has a beautiful wedding that I believe was small and intimate.  I bet she could give you some ideas.

    Congratulations by the way!

  • There are a lot of officiants out there that can do a great job, we went with Chaplain Larry Todd from:

     https://www.austinweddingchaplains.com/

They also have other chaplains, fees go to charity and they're really open to doing what YOU want for your ceremony.

As for the venue, it's been a while but the smaller venues I remember people having a lot of success with back when I was wedding planning were:

  • Congrats!

You probably already know this, but if you really want to get married in the Catholic Church, you can get your first marriages annulled.  My mom and step-dad both had their first marriages annulled.  It took a while and was not inexpensive, but they had a small civil ceremony while they worked on their annulments and then got married in the church once the annulments had gone through.

  • I'm not sure if it's large enough, but Z Tejas downtown has a lovely private room.

Ditto kiarox. I don't know if you're actively practicing Catholics, but if you are, you'll (both) want to look into having your first marriages annulled. The Church doesn't have issue w/ continuing to receive sacraments if you are divorced, but they do consider remarriage a mortal sin if the first marriage has not been annulled.

If it's something you're interested in doing, The Diocese of Austin has information on their site as to how to go about the process.

  • Congratulations!!  Yes, I just went through the planning and would love to give you all the info I have.  Shoot me an email at lainaustin at yahoo.  Congrats again!
  • Congrats again. So happy for you. :)

Great suggestions so far - Maggianos is great and kid friendly. Although it's a little bit of a hike, Salt Lick would be nice (if you liked/wanted BBQ and a hill country atmosphere). We had our rehearsal dinner there and they were great/easy to work with.

  • Congratulations!!

My sister had her reception at Moonshine last year, and they were great. There were about 50 of us. The food was amazing and a great time was had by all.
