ring sling

So I just got a ring sling this past week and have been playing around with it and think I have it figured out. Here are my questions though... when I do a hip carry it hurts my shoulder after about 45 mins. Is that normal? And 2nd question... when I do a cradle carry him the bottom rail (side) cuts into my side and goes up under my rib. How do I fix that?

Re: ring sling

  • Yeah, I can only last so long with the ring sling. If it's going to be more of a marathon, I use something with 2 shoulders. I think that's normal.

I never use the cradle carry, so I can't help with that.

  • One thing that might help is to check that you're spreading the sling out as much as possible over your shoulder and your back. Also, make sure you're carrying her high enough that you can kiss the top of her head.

It also helps to alternate shoulders.

I never really cradle carried either. So I can't help there...

I love my ring slings, but now that DD is getting heavier (almost 20 lbs), I find wrapping her to be better because it distributes her weight.

  • Thanks for the help ladies. I think I just need to get used to it a little more and stick with the ergo if I know it will be an extended period of time.

  • I for sure use the Ergo if I think he'll be in over an hour. The ring sling is GREAT for shopping trips, church, wearing over my winter coat - I've used it more than I thought I would. And it fits better in my diaper bag.

Definitely more of a learning curve than the Ergo, but still simple enough to get used to it pretty quickly.

  • I agree with PP that the RS can get tough after a while because of the single shoulder. I have moved my DD more to the front in in, with her straddling my stomach and it's easier on my hip and back. I haven't tried a two-shoulder like an ergo, but now that DD is getting bigger i'm looking into it.
