Will my OB do an ultrasound at 7 weeks?

I just made my first OB appointment for March 1st, at which point I will be 7 weeks pregnant. For those of you who had your first appointment around that time or before, did your doctor do an ultrasound? Is it standard to do an ultrasound at 7 weeks? Or, should I reschedule the appointment for the following week (or later) to up my chances of getting one?

Re: Will my OB do an ultrasound at 7 weeks?

  • Some offer optional ultrasounds.  In my experience they do not unless they need to verify the gestational age of the baby.  GL

  • I had an appointment last week when I was just 7 weeks and a couple days and they said they wouldn't do one until between 12 and 20 weeks:(  They said at my next appointment around 11 weeks I will get to hear baby's heartbeat.  Seems like forever to wait though!  Hope you get one sooner & congrats!! :)

  • I had my first appointment at 9 weeks 5 days and we got a dating ultrasound.

I wouldn't reschedule your appointment to up your chances of getting one. Every doctor is different. Some only do one ultrasound between 18 and 20 weeks. You'll get one when they feel you need one.

  • I got an ultrasound at 7 weeks with my first pregnancy and 6 weeks with this pregnancy, but every doctor is different. Why don't you call and ask??

  • Yes, I had a transvaginal ultrasound at 7w2d.....They measured how the heart was beating and the size of the baby and the uterus.....You could always call and ask??

  • My first appointment is at 7 weeks and I will have a U/S, so I am bringing DH along.  I would call and ask tomorrow so you can be prepared:)

  • I had my high risk consultation at 7w1d and they did an ultrasound to date the pregnancy, even though I knew the dates perfectly. We saw the little baby and the heartbeat!

Mine was transvaginal, in part because I am fat and because it was so early anyway. Abdominally we did see the gestational sac.

  • Call and ask.  If they don't do one at 7 weeks, it's unlikely they do one at 8 weeks either.  Some doctors do early u/s' and others don't do any until the anatomy scan at 18-22 weeks (unless you opt for the NT scan).

  • Mine did the first appt.  I was at about 6-7 weeks.

  • Mine did. All depends on your OB.
  • A lot will depend on your insurance, and whether or not they will pay for it. My insurance does and my doctors office does a viability u/s around 7 weeks, but I am also 41 and have a subchorionic bleed. If you want to know if they will, call the office in the morning...just be prepared for the possibility that they will not do an early u/s.

  • With my second daughter my ob at 7 weeks did the family history and bloodwork with the nurse. Then he scheduled an appointment with him the following week and did a pap and dating ultrasound. He has since changed that and now the two are one appointment at 8 weeks. I am glad I asked when I scheduled. Call and ask they will tell you what to expect
  • I had my first u/s at 7 weeks.  Granted, I was spotting and I was supposed to go in at 8 weeks, but they would have done the u/s then anyway.   I think it depends on the Dr.

  • I had one at 5 1/2 weeks ( thought I was 6 1/2) and too early to see much so going back at 8 weeks
  • Mine did, but i know it's not normally routine.

  • Mine normally will not until 12 weeks, but I am high risk, so if my blood work looks good, they will do an u/s at 6 or 7 weeks.

  • Every provider is different on if they do an ultrasound by default at the first appt. The only way to know for sure is to call your doctors office and ask.
  • My doctor did a hand held one on a portable machine (which was SO awesome) at 7.5 weeks, but it wasn't anything super official. It was more for the purpose of confiming the EDD, because we weren't sure (since baby was a big surprise). But I wouldn't reschedule. You can always ask when you are there and see what s/he says.

  • My office does the first u/s about 8 weeks so they can determine a due date.
