Last night after bathtime, DH sat DD up on the counter where we
normally let her sit for us to dry her hair. He turned around to drain
the bathwater and in that few seconds, she fell off the counter and hit
her head. She cried for a few seconds, then went limp and her eyes
rolled back in her head. She came to and started to act like she was
going to vomit. Then screamed for what seemed like forever Scariest
thing of our lives! 1 Fire Truck, 1 Ambulance, and a trip to the ER
later, it appears she is fine other than a mild concussion. She handled
things much better than we did and thank God she is so far OK. We had to
check on her every 2 hours last night and she seemed to sleep
peacefully (thought she didn't go to bed until 11). We will continue to
watch her today and see how she does, although she appears to be acting
like her normal self this morning. DH is really taking it hard and beating himself up. He "knows" it was an accident, but as a parent, you can imagine the guilt he is feeling.
Just wanted to post as a reminder to all of us. It's easy to get complacent and fall into your routines without thinking or paying much attention. Always remember to watch your children and never leave them unattended (especially in elevated places) for even a few seconds.
Re: PSA: It can happen in a few seconds!
Couldn't have said it better myself. DH called me in a panic one night that Emily rolled off the changing pad in the bathroom. He had one hand on her as he was reaching into the linen closet to get more diapers and she just flipped out from under his hand. Luckily she mostly just rolled down his leg but still bonked her head on the floor =(
I'm so glad your daughter is OK. Thank you for sharing your story. Definitely a valuable reminder of what can happen when we drop our guard.
When DH was a newborn my FIL had him on a changing table, bent down to get something out of the bottom drawer, and DH rolled over and fell directly into his arms. Oops. They tell it with a laugh now but at the time I'm sure he was really shaken.
Omigosh, how awful. Glad she's ok.
Earlier today my 15 month old fell off my husbands back when he was playing horsey with her but luckily she sort of rolled down and bonked her head on the carpet (sort of like Taytee's little one) but she definitely was stunned for a few seconds from the impact. I'm still traumatized about it.
I hope she's ok. My DS is always falling (he's always running and jumping) and at any given time has a bruise on his head. We've been to the ER before and they always say once he didn't pass out he's probably ok so when I read this post my heart just started racing. Please give us an update throught out the day, you'll be in my prayers.
