If you have a Britax Frontier 85...

Do you have the regular 85 or the very newest "SICT" version? Any thoughts? Best prices are $212 old or $254 for the SICT. Seems the main differences are the extra side cushioning and an easier to remove cover. DS does ocassionally throw up on road-trips. Just how hard is cover to remove on original? And not sure about the cushions...worried it would add too much bulk. But I do have a minivan, so I suppose I've got nothing but space.

Any thoughts about one model vs. the other? Which color do you have? Some reviews of the original 85 mentioned some mesh that rips easily. Last, does it in fact eventually convert to backless booster? Some review mentioned that, but I thought it only went from 5 pt harness to high back belt positioning booster.
Thanks!

  • We have the regular Britax Frontier 85 in Onyx. To me, the cover isn't any harder to remove than any other car seat we've owned. As far as cushioning, the seat we have is pretty comfy for DD. She falls asleep all the time. As far as bulk because of extra cushioning, you do realize that the Frontier is not a small car seat to begin with? I haven't seen the new SICT version so I can't compare the two. Oh and I do not believe that it turns into a backless booster. I'm pretty sure it just goes from 5 point harness to high back belt positioning booster.

Ditto. I have 2 in Onyx, it wipes down easily and the cover is also easy to get off. No, I didn't get the SICT, it wouldn't fit in the captains chairs, the SICT wings make the seat too wide. Love this seat. And no, it doesn't convert to low back, high back only, but I prefer the high backs.

  • We have the original Frontier 85, 2 of them actually, and really like them.  DS1 really likes it as well.  He seems very comfortable and it's much easier for him to climb into, which I like.  They are easy to install, even though I read some reviews on amazon.com saying they were difficult to install, I have no idea what those people were doing wrong.

Like someone else said the Frontier 85 is already a big carseat and with the SICT wings its just enormous.  Plus, I feel like the original has adequate side impact protection.  We also tried the Graco Nautilus and the Frontier is much bigger, but fits DS much better.  The crotch strap on the Nautilus was almost too tight for DS like 6 months ago when we first tried it, it would have never lasted until he was 5 or so.

It does not convert into a backless booster.  We have one in Canyon and one in Onyx.

Ditto the bolded...I don't know what they were doing to make it so hard. It literally takes me less than a minute to tighten the lower LATCH strap and the top tether. And that seat has zero wiggle.
