Anyone else have 50-50 custody?

The responses to my last post about child support and shared expense plans got me thinking.  For those of you with 50-50 custody I have a few questions.

Why did you come to this arrangement?

Does it work fairly well for you?

How do you work out the financial part? (ie do you have child support or some other system)

How old are your kids? And if they are young, do you think this arrangement will work when they get to school age?

I'm new to the board (but not to single parenthood). I thought I'd answer....

(1) We started with him having less parenting time but as it became clear that things were going well we increased his time. We still aren't quite to 50/50 yet but we have a plan to do so next year. Right now I have DS 4 nights / week and XH has him 3 nights.

(2) Yes, it works quite well. It was a difficult adjustment for me (because nobody wants to share their kid half the time!) but DS adjusted well.

(3) I get paid a small amount of child support ($144/month) and XH pays for most of daycare because he makes 3x more than I do. I'm finishing up my last semester in college and that will all be reevaluated after I graduate and get a full time job.

(4) My son is 2. I have no idea what we will do when he starts school. As it is my XH lives 30 minutes away but he works in the area that I live. If this continues then I can see us making it work where he drives DS to school on his days. If he gets a different job in a different area and still lives 30 minutes away I don't see how it could work. I figure that's a bridge I'll cross later.
