Preemies

Fist clenching and rigid extremities

Hi Everyone!

I am new here!! my friend referred me to this board said there are some awesome moms to get great information and advice from!! Who could pass that up, right!!!  Well I do not get a chance to use computer much (I guess Im old fashion).  Well I have a preemie daughter born 8/12/11 so she is over 6 months old, but >3 months adjusted (if I did math correctly)   Just wondering when fist clenching in preemies go away.  She is over 6 months old now but should that go away or is it based on 3 months?  Also do preemies tend to stay rigid for awhile especially tight in lower extremities?  She did have IVH and other NICU issues and of course I did the gamete of questions and research and what to expect.  But just wondering how long your preemie had fist clenching and rigid lower extremities if any.  I know all babies are different and diagnosis can not be made till later but I just like hearing from other preemie moms.

Thank you

  • My D never had clenched fists.  She did have high tone in her feet until she was probably 5 months actual.  Have you brought up your concerns with your pedi?  Is your child seen by EI?  They should be able to give you guidance on what is "normal".

  • Welcome!

My 27-weeker had fist clenching issues through 6 or 7 months. She still does it when learning something new or when she is stressed. She had low tone issues as well though it sounds like your LO has high tone.

Have you had her evaluated by Early Intervention? If not, I would ask your pedi for a referral. They will determine if your baby needs therapy of any kind (we have OT 3 times a month).

Oh and generally, all developmental things happen based on adjusted age with preemies, especially those born extremely early.

  • both my 27 weekers still do the fist clenching. They will be 6mths in a few days (3 months adjusted). My DS has a number of other issues including extreme stiffness in his legs because of the trauma he suffered and being in a hospital so long, but my DD was evaluated by EI and said to be right on track developmentally for her adjusted age. They weren't concerned about the fist clenching.
