Work and weekly dr's appointment?

Just wondering how everyone elses work deals with them having a lot of doctors appointments, as in do they make you take time off for them, clock in and out?

I am salaried so I have assumed it wasn't a big deal but my boss told me today that he has been counting my appointments and that he thinks they should count agains my paid time off which it seems like he could have told me 5 months ago!

So how does your work deal with this?

Re: Work and weekly dr's appointment?

  • oh that's mean. I had to use either sick time or vacation time so I guess it was similar...but I don't like the way he said that to you.

  • I have had many appointments but they haven't mentioned anything yet.

I'm hoping that it won't become a problem.

  • My 1st pregnancy I was never docked time. I was salaried and my work was always done. Small company.

I still work at the same place but we were bought out, are bigger now and more corporate. For this pregnancy, I have to use personal or vacation time for my appointments. Sucks.

  • I am a teacher too but if I have to miss a whole class or more I have to take sick time.  The first two appts were afternoon and I only missed part of a class so I got coverage but the next one I am taking a half day and have backup coverage just in case I am running late for my next class.

  • I am home now but when I did work I just used my lunch hour for my doc appts.

  • I'm not the norm because I work by the billable hour.  As long as I bill sufficient hours in a month, the hours I'm here aren't important (within reason).  The bad side of that is that when we have holidays in a month, that generally means I'm working from home to make up the time.  The same is true for doctors appts.  My OB is used to me bringing work to the appts so I can try not to lose too much time.

  • I either use my lunch hour or work later to make up the time. I am salaried but we earn "credit" time for anything over 40 hours so sometimes I build up and use credit time.

If I didn't do either of the above I would have to use sick time. I try to avoid this though because we don't have any short term disability for maternity leave and I have to rely on my sick time to get me through my 6/8 weeks of "medical time". I need every bit I can get because I am taking between 5 and 7 months off in total.

  • I work 9-5 so I schedule my appointments at 8. If they are longer (like the ultrasound) I flex out some of my time (I'm salary). Can you schedule yours at the beginning or the end of your day so you don't miss quite as much?

  • I'm salaried too. If I have a 2hr appt, I will usually work through my lunches a couple days that week. If it's going to be a longer appt, then I'll take a 1/2 day.
  • I work a 9/80 so I schedule mine for my day off when possible. Otherwise I take time off, I'm salary and receive a bank of management leave each year so that comes in handy.
  • I schedule all my appts for 4pm. I get to work about 15-20 min and I work through lunch and eat at my desk. That way I make up the hour or so I am out.

  • It sounds to me like he's discriminating against you because you're pg and that's illegal.  Unless he follows the same policy for all salaried employees, then he can't do that to you.  I would speak to HR about it.

  • My work counts it as "medical time/personal day" which is totally independent from vacation time, at the most requires a confirmation note from doc that an appointment is necessary and I *think* can average out to 2 full days per month over the course of a year without being considered "excessive"
  • I agree with the post about talking to hr. This does not sound right. I have been worried about comments b/c my office is right next to my boss's office so he can see when I'm gone. I've been out to a lot of appointments for both OB and also other health issues and testing that have been popping up. Thankfully my clinic/lab is within a few miles but it still takes an hour. I also had to stay home to do a 24-hour urine test when I couldn't fit it in on a weekend but I worked from home and copied my bosses in an e-mail explaining I was working from home "for a 24-hour prenatal test."  I am salaried but my salary ultimately depends on my billable hours. While they said they'll pro-rate for maternity leave, I will admit I'm a bit worried about the impact all of the appointments will take on my hours while I'm here. I am getting my work done which is the most important thing, and I'm sure you are too, so he should not be docking you.I'm not sure what your job is but can you point out to him you're still getting the work done? Or maybe you have to stay later to get a project done but ultimately the project is done so what did it matter you were gone from 9-10 for an appointment?

And what if this wasn't pregnancy? Would he dock someone's pay if they were going to chemo treatments?
