2nd Trimester

Nausea during second trimester...???

Ok, so I had literally NO morning sickness during first trimester.  Did not throw up even once!  Now, I'm almost 19 weeks and three times in the past few weeks I have like dry heaved or thrown up like a little bit of liquid from my stomach.  Sorry if that is TMI, but I need to know, is this normal?

Twice it happened when I had taken a Tums or Tylenol on an empty stomach, but this morning it happened when I woke up and hadn't had anything to eat or drink.  I'm wondering if it happens when I'm hungry, but I've eaten breakfast since then and I'm still feeling a little weird.

I might be freaking out because I'm a teacher and at school and I'm worried I will throw up in the middle of class!  Also - I just want to make sure everything is okay with Baby.

Anyone else experiencing this?  Any advice?  Should I call my dr?

Re: Nausea during second trimester...???

  • With DD I never threw up until 12 weeks.  Then I was sick the rest of the pregnancy.  Just par for the course I guess.  Hope it gets better soon!

  • I am 17 weeks along (18 weeks on Monday) and still experience nausea with vomiting.  The conventional statement that morning sickness starts in the first trimester and goes away in the second trimester is true for many women, but not all.

My doctor has told me not to worry unless I cannot keep anything down (food or liquids) or if I start vomiting a dark, gravely substance (which indicates a tear in your stomach, I believe).

You can give your doc a call or speak with one of the nurses.  They can give you some peace of mind and advice.

  • I've had terrible morning sickness throughout 1st tri and still have some nausea with occasional vomitting here and there so it's not quite over yet for me.  I've been doing good these past couple weeks, then I threw up over the weekend and have had an increase in nausea so my guess is I'm having some sort of hormone fluctuation (also read that in one of my books).  So with the change in hormones that happens at different points in pregnancy, that could be what's causing it for you?  My advice would be to eat every few hours and as soon as you get up, (you can try crackers in bed before rising) and don't ever take medicine on an empty stomach -yuck!  I've thrown up from that too many times this pregnancy!

  • I was very nauseated during 1st tri but never got sick. at  12 weeks I started throwing up on an almost daily basis until about 20 weeks.

  • I had morning sickness for 20 weeks and still get it sometimes off and on....this one is a girl....never got it with DS....so for me the old wives tale is true!!

  • I haven't had any nausea yet but I do gag a lot. I'll cough a dry cough until I almost throw up. It's the strangest thing - happens atleast a couple times a day. My DH is like WTF is wrong with you? haha

  • I'm 19 weeks and have been sick throughout the pregnancy, it's getting better the farther along I get but I'm still pretty nauseus most of the time. I've found that constantly keeping food in my stomach keeps me from getting sick - I feel like I'm always eating, which I am, but thankfully I haven't put on hardly any weight.

Also people don't think about prenatals upsetting stomachs, but I haven't been able to take mine at all - my OB has me on gummy Flintstones vitamins.

If I don't eat before I go to bed and get up at least once in the night to eat a little something, I'm sick in the morning.

Just a thought, but as wonderful as puking is, might not hurt to try grazing constantly!

  • With my first I didn't get sick until almost 4 months. This time I have been sick the whole time so far. I threw up 3 times yesterday and have lost close to 10lbs. I am hoping it goes away soon, but sadly no promises it will. Just thankful to have made it this far.

  • Thanks to everyone for their help and advice!  Looks like I'm not the only on!  I figured it was fine, but I just had to double check.

I love how these posts are the only time we can unashamedly talk about our vomiting habits!!!

     Happy Friday!

PS-I'm almost to the end of the school day and feeling much better :)

  • I still have it mostly at night.
  • I would to keep some food in your stomach and eat a high-protein snack (greek yogurt, cheese, almonds, etc.) when you start to feel ill. That is working like a charm for me this PG--I do throw up, but rarely. Last PG I threw up from weeks 7 to 37, but I didn't know about the protein trick, and I think some other issues played in.
