Breast Pumps

Hello Ladies....for those of you who are breastfeeding your twins did you rent or buy your pumps? I was planning on renting mine from the hospital because I heard they are better and stronger but lately have been considering just buying one and having it at home? Has anyone rented one before and if so were you happy with the rental? Thanks!

Re: Breast Pumps

  • I did both. I used the one in the hospital while we were there and I got a Medela Pump in Style from a friend and used it at home. I would look on CL for a used pump, it's perfectly fine to get - you just want to replace the tubing, membranes, etc. and you end up paying a fraction of the cost of a new one.

Renting for us was a PITA, it was expensive and to do it through our insurance was a hassle.

  • we bought the pump n style for my son and plan to use it again for the twins.  i need to test it out again soon (as much as i can) and make sure it still works properly or we will buy another one. i really liked it.  i felt that it was "strong" enough or whatever and i felt it was really portable.

  • Check with your insurance. A lot of insurances will cover them. Mine did with DD. They covered the Medela PISA in full. I've also had 4 friends do the same, so it's worth a try.

  • I only planned on pumping/bf for 12 weeks while on maternity leave, so I chose to rent since it would only be a few months. I have the medela symphony and it's great. Ended up not bf'ing, so i am EP and getting ready to stop after 2 months. So renting worked great for me. So I think it depends on how long you plan to use it.

  • I bought a hospital grade pump. When we came home from the hospital only one of my LOs would take the breast and I had to pump for the other. I had a Medela PISA first and hated it. It took too long and was loud. I ended up buying the kind that I used at the hospital- the Ameda Elite. I found it on ebay for the same price it would have been to rent it for 4 or 5 months. I EBF now so I only pump once a day but I'm glad I have the hospital grade pump because it takes less time while I am taking care of the babies by myself.

Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
  • also, one thing that bugged me about the pump n style is that you can only pump into medela bottles and we dont use those  - we used Born Free with my son.  it wasnt a big deal but was mildly annoying at first.
