Infertility

IVF

so after having a tuble in march of 2010 in right side they saved the tube and fixed it. a miscarriage in august 2011.and another tuble in right side again in December 2011 they had to take my whole right side tube and ovary. I am only left with one ovary and tube on the left side. Went to talk to an infertility Dr down in des monies and he told us what we figured and feared already. We will have to do IFV in order to have a baby which sucks. :-( I am not sure how we are going to pay for it it is so expensive it will cost us about $13,000 for one try at it. Our insurance don't cover anything to do with infertility. any one else have this problem? so bummed.

Re: IVF

  • Don't fear IVF it was the best thing ever and it's providing me with babies. I wouldnt be putting a dollar amount on human beings and the love of a child. GL

I understand the sentiment but it's easier to say that when IVF works for you. Many of us make having kids our first priority, but that doesn't mean that it is an easy thing to embrace both financially or emotionally and I for one think it is totally natural to have fears and reservations about IVF, especially when going in cold. I also think that IVF is a challenge that can be met and that the community here can offer a huge amount of support and information that makes the process so much less intimidating.

Welcome bridgetzak and good luck with moving forward.

  • I am also 100% OOP for all IF related expenses. There are several organizations that can help you to finance IVF and its related procedures and some also offer multiple shots and usually 1 or 2 FET cycles on top of it. I would suggest you look into one of these. We are going to finance as we go along so I haven't personally used one of these companies but they exist for a reason! There may also be some things you can have done at a reduced cost if you qualify - I know the ladies on this board will have a wealth of knowledge about this. A good place to start is resolve.com. https://www.resolve.org/family-building-options/insurance_coverage/infertility-financing-programs.html

I am sorry you have to be here and I agree that it does suck, but honestly I am so very grateful that we have this opportunity!

  • IVF is scary, especially if you are starting right there, but once you get started, it really isn't too bad. I know my biggest fear was that it wouldn't work. I saw IVF as being the end of the road. Well, it didn't work, but we're still going. So it's not the end that I thought it was going to be.

The finances are hard, especially if you end up needing multiple cycles. We did end up financing it, but not with any of the fertility loans that are available. They all have crappy interest rates. We found we could do better with a 0% interest credit card. It gives us cash back, plus one year to pay it off.

Good luck, and stick around. You will find an excellent support group here!

  • I'm so sorry to hear about your tubals and having to lose your right ovary and tube. I am in the same situation as you for a different reason. IVF is very scary at first, but it becomes much easier to understand and get through emotionally because of this board. My DH and I were lucky to have my parents help fund our first IVF and extremely lucky to have a doctor not charge at all for IVF #2 and our upcoming Soft IVF. Because of our situation and our doctor being an older doctor certainly not struggling with his practice, he has been very generous. I'm not sure how others do it financially. If you have any questions please ask the ladies on this board and I hope your stay here is short and sweet.
