DS1 during labor?

Hi all. I rarely post on here but am so stressed I thought I would look for some reassurance. My LO has only ever stayed with my husband and I. I am so nervous about leaving him during my delivery.  I can't get past the thought of him freaking for a day while we are gone. We don't really have family for him to get used to and to help us during that time. He will have to stay with a friend that he obviously knows, but I am sure it will be a challenge. How did your LOs do during that time?

Re: DS1 during labor?

  • I had a scheduled induction for DD2 so my mom was able to fly up the night before and keep DD1 for us. In the event that I went into labor before that we had some friends from Church who have a daughter the same age as our DD1 on call to take her til my mom could get there. It was hard for me too since DD1 was only 16.5 months at the time and we hadn't left her with too many non-family babysitters yet but I knew she'd have a lot more fun NOT being at the hospital with us :) She did great with my mom, but I know she would've done great with our friends too.

  • We're still not sure what we'll do with DS when I go into labor, but when I had a preterm labor scare the other week and had to go to the hospital we left DS with my dad and a few of his friends (read: a friend of his whose wife is a grandmother of four and LOVES babies). I was so nervous about how DS would react to being with them all evening and be put to bed by them (it was the first time he had ever been put to bed by anyone other than DH or I), and apparently he was happy, fine and went to bed easily! We were so relieved!

  • We had a single friend watch DD at our house.  She took her to daycare and picked her up...  we really wanted to keep her routine as much as possible.  DD had so much fun!  She came to the hospital to visit us each day and had no trouble leaving.

I was completely stressed about DD and it worked out just fine.  :)

  • We are really fortunate to have DH's family here, so the plan was for him to stay with Grandpa and Grandma at night and Great-Grandma and Great-Grandpa during the day. We made sure to stay overnight a few times so he got used to sleeping at their house. Everything went according to our plan except that DS got a horrible stomach flu the first night. My poor in-laws were up all night with him and he didn't sleep well the first three nights he was there. If it wasn't for that, I'm sure he would have been perfectly happy.

  • I have no advice, except to say we're in the same boat.  Our neighbors suggested having a few trial runs before, but I don't know if that will make the situation better or worse.

  • We just left DD with my parents for her first overnight with grandma and grandpa over the weekend.  We plan on doing a few trial runs before #2 is due.  She did great.  She had fun, went to bed with no issues, and slept better than she does at home.  I have to admit that I'm a little jealous bedtime was so easy for them!
