Mei tai question

I bought a mei tai and I really like it except I'm not sure DD does. The problem is she is only 8 pounds so I have to wear her like a newborn with legs inside the wrap but that seems to bother her. She was born at 26 weeks and is 6 weeks adjusted but is developmentally pretty far ahead of 6 weeks. But her size/growth is way behind so she acts nothing like an 8 pound baby normally would.

So when I put her in the mei tai belly to belly she literally stands up straight with her feet against the pocket so that her back and head are sticking way out of the top of the carrier. She has complete head control so that isn't an issue but obviously she would fall backwards out of the wrap if I didn't hold her, she just doesn't seem to want to squat froggy style. When I wear her in my moby she like it but I can wear her belly to belly with legs out where as her legs just aren't long enough to be worn like that in the mei tai.

Anyways is there anything I can do or other ways to wear her? Or am I just not going to be able to until she's bigger?

Re: Mei tai question

  • You could try using a receiving blanket as a butt pillow (like the Ergo insert). And even if her legs don't stick out, you can wrap them around you inside the mei tai (if they go that way naturally, of course).

    I will try that, thanks!

  • You can also cinch the bottom of the mei tai w/ a ribbon or something so she can go legs out. Cinch just enough so that the fabric spreads knee to knee, allowing legs to bend at the knee naturally. If that puts her too far down into the carrier, you can also roll the waist band up before tying it on.

This is what we had to do when my guy started trying to stand in the mei-tai.  But he was 13/14 weeks at that point.

I'd second what Aquabee wrote.  It sounds like she wants her legs out.
