DS would eat all day if I let him

He eats ok at meal times, but I usually have to keep on him to eat.  Then he's constantly saying he's hungry and asking for snacks.  He doesn't eat junk, so I can't complain about that.  I know its healthier to eat multiple times a day rather than large meals but this eating all day gets frustrating.  And I worry once he's in school all day, how will I adjust him to that?  My niece struggled with Kindergarten because at hot lunch she was not allowed to go up for more food, but was only allowed to take so much food when she did go up and she would come home SO hungry.

Re: DS would eat all day if I let him

  • We struggle with the same thing with our four year old.  She does eat healthy, no junk, but I am on her to finish her meals.  I try to stick to somewhat of a schedule, breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner and a dessert/snack of some sort.

When she comes up to me and says she is hungry - I either offer her her unfinished breakfast or lunch or give her 2 healthy options like applesauce or cut up fruit.  If she's truly still hungry - she'll finish her leftovers or take me up on the healthy snack choices.  If she's not and just fishing for more crackers/goldfish/pretzels etc., she'll quickly say she's not hungry anymore ;) Sometimes I offer her water since I think that triggers hunger when they haven't drank enough.

When she's tired and bored I notice she says she's hungry more often.  Sometimes I can distract her by saying "let's go ________"  Anyhow, just wanted to let you know it can be a daily battle in our home as well!  :-)

  • My sons eat all day long when they are home. They eat really well at mealtime too, but then snack around the clock. They have no issues at school with snack time. Even though my oldest does bring in a pretty decent snack for morning kindergarten ; ) but they are definitely starving when they get home.

  • My daughter would do the same!  She has a very healthy appetite.  I typically keep good things around like fruit, applesauce and yogurt but I also have pretzels, crackers and chips.  I try to keep things simple by offering two snacks, one "good" like the applesauce and one "bad" like the chips.  If she gets chips, it's only a little bit and if she's still hungry after that, I offer water or something to drink.  She eats 3 full meals but has gotten into the routine of asking for a snack right after eating a meal...and I mean RIGHT after!  The answer is always no but it doesn't stop her from asking--LOL!
