Unisom for m/s?

I was FB chatting with my friend who has two kids and I was telling her I am really excited to be pregnant but that I feel so crappy most of the time that it's kind of ruining my enthusiasm. She said to take Unisom Sleepmelts before bed. I am about to order them but thought I would ask her first. Is this safe? Is it true they aren't addicting? Thanks.

Re: Unisom for m/s?

  • My nurse suggested I try this, for sleeping and M/S.  I definitely slept through the whole night on them, it was wonderful.

  • My OB recommends Unisom plus vitamin B6 too, but the B6 doesn't make up for the drowsiness of the Unisom (for me). I do take half of one Unisom before bed at night, and it has actually seemed to help the m/s a little.

BUT, I don't think it's the SleepMelts. I'd do some more research on that one. That has a different main ingredient than the tablets, and I was told to get the tablets.

Unisom is great for M/S, but NOT the sleepmelts - I think those are just Benadryl in a different formulation.  It's the tablets that are Doxylamine Succinate that have been proven to help with M/S in clinical trials (both types are safe while PG but the benadryl - diphenhydramine - ones won't be as helpful for the nausea).

I've been taking half a unisom nightly since 6 weeks and it works wonders. I stopped needing it for m/s around 18 weeks but I need it now for sleep!

Check with your doc first, of course.

    Oh gosh, thanks a million!

  • I'm taking unisom/B6 as recommended by my doctor, and it's helped a lot. I rarely feel sick anymore. I take 1/2 unisom twice daily (the sleep tabs, NOT the melts) and 25 mg B6 twice daily.

I have had some pretty strange/intense dreams since starting this regimen (at 6 wks pg). I wonder if the unisom is to blame, or it's just coincidental?

  • As others have said, you want the sleeptabs... the Unisom with diphenhydramine is chemically identical to Benadryl.

Unisom has been helping me tremendously. Yesterday was my first day puking... 3 times in less than 12 hours, and I was unable to keep anything down at all. After I took a Unisom (which I prayed would stay down), I was able to eat half a can of chicken soup and keep it down before I went to sleep. Today, I feel kind of borderline, but I've kept down the other half can of soup and some applesauce. Before yesterday, I had not taken Unisom for the past 2 nights... I think there might be something related there.

I've taken 100mg of B6 every day since before getting pregnant. Before implementing the Unisom, I was nauseous even with the B6, but there's no way to tell if the B6 has actually helped me remain less nauseous than I would have been without it. I'm not about to quit taking it to find out, though. haha.
