If you drink soy/almond/coconut milk...

What is your reason?  Are you allergic?  Are you changing your diet for BFing?  Maybe you just like it better than regluar milk?

I grew up drinking milk with every dinner, no questions.  I went dairy free for a couple of weeks with Audrey to see if she was allergic (she wasn't) and I was drinking low fat vanilla soy milk.  I really liked it.  DH & I rarely drink milk anymore so I only buy whole milk for Stella.  If DH wants a glass he will have that.  I'm going to start buying soy or almond milk to make smoothies at home so that's what sparked by curiosity.

Is soy milk (or almond milk) "better" for you than cow's milk?

Re: If you drink soy/almond/coconut milk...

  • We get the dark chocolate almond milk for L as a treat, as well as the regular.  DH get it's for some smoothie that he makes so we have it in the house almost all the time.  I'm pretty sure that the container says 50% more calcium than cow's milk, or something like that.  Plus, L LOVES milk but it tends to bind him up, so the almond milk helps in that department.
  • I drink both. I loooove cow's milk. I sometimes drink Silk Pure Almond vanilla more as a treat, I like how it tastes.

  • You might have started a war on soy lol. There are studies that show it has a similar effect as estrogen so not to give it to children before puberty.... there's a war on everything i feel like even non organic milk for your children is a no no these days. I drink it because I never really liked cows milk and I'm lactose intolerant. I can handle organic  yogurt and cheese, but not milk. I too grew up with milk at every meal, but I was allowed to put ovulteen(sp?) it it.

This was just mentioned to me the other day b/c my son was on a soy based formula b/c of a lactose sensitivity....He didn't grow boobs, so I think he's ok, but I was annoyed that the person was SO adamant that he would have issues....

    Yes

I thought there was some controversy about soy vs. cow's, but I've been too lazy to google.

  • We have soy milk in the house because my husband is lactose intolerant. I'll drink that/use in my cereal if I run out of regular milk. And I drink coconut milk almost like I would any other beverage because I like the taste of it!

  • I got it as a better alternative to coffee creamer, but went with the Silk coffee creamer, instead of the soymilk.  I am not sure what the benefits are, except when people have allergies, but I think that the girl that I am friends with who is a dietician drinks it...I should ask her.
