Pregnant after IF

Lurker from IF & 3T - ET?

I know it's been asked a million times, but I have to ask once again. How many did you transfer?

We are both 29, I am in o-kay health. I do have a high blood pressure issue but it is controlled. Everything else is fine though. I would probably be seen as a high risk pregnancy. However, DH might be moving down south soon and I would stay up here until I am released from my RE if we do get pregnant. We like the idea of twins, but of course would love just one. We are leaning towards transferring 2 so that would maximize our chances of conceiving this month as we might not get too many more chances before DH moves.

Thoughts? Who has transferred 2? How many stuck?

TIA ladies!

Re: Lurker from IF & 3T - ET?

  • I've always transferred 2 great looking blasts for the three times I've had transfers and only 1 has stuck each time. Granted the 1st 2 ended in eaely losses so I'm assuming for those. GL with your decision.

  • For me, this was a really hard, personal decision I struggled with before each transfer...we transferred 2 both times, this last time we were successful and both stuck. I couldn't be happier or more thankful. :)

But I have seen some many women who transferred 2 and got one as well...

  • We have transferred one both times.

Our first resulted in a c/p.

Our second resulted in a pregnancy. I am 11 weeks 5 days today.

We have unexplained IF (found to have fertilization issues when we went through IVF), DH and I are both in good health as well and no other issues.

Our RE pushed to a SET, and we agreed.

  • Since it was our first IVF, our RE really pushed for 1, although we were open to multiples.  She reminded us how multiples are high risk and can be dangerous - its not all cute twins and matching outfits.  Ultimately, we decided on 1 since it was our first shot.  If #1 was a BFN and we had to go for IVF #2, I think we would have transferred 2.

She also mentioned how transferring 2, for us, wouldn't really increase the chances of getting pregnant.  It would more increase the chance for multiples... if that make sense!

Its definitely a personal decision and involved much discussion between DH and myself.  Good luck!!

  • Because this was our first IVF attempt and our health/age etc, our RE strongly recommended transferring either 2 embryos on day 3 or 1 blast on day 5.  So the amt to transfer has a lot to do with the day on which you transfer.

In the beginning we were thinking about transferring 2 blasts hoping that it would increase our chances and if we get pregnant with twins great our family is done.  But after thinking about it, we didn't want to purposefully increase health risks to these potential babies and myself, so we wound up transferring 1 blast.  I haven't had an ultrasound yet, but I'm assuming there's only one in there!

  • We agreed to transfer 2 on day 3 or 1 on day 5. The odds of multiples with transferring 2 on day 5 is just too high, and our RE said her goal is to get us pregnant with one baby. We did 2 on day 3 and one stuck. I am 35 and unexplained (and a twin who didn't want the risk involved with twins... my sister almost died at birth and we both spent months in the NICU, not to mention the cost and marital strain for my parents).

This. Though I am an outlier in that I was advised to transfer 2 because I came in for a 3d transfer. I went with one and that is what I am pregnant with. I am not "open" to multiples though and was prepared to go through ivf more than once so it made the eSET decision easier.

  • Thanks ladies. After being decided with DH to transfer 2 on day 5, you all have given me a lot to think about. I think we will go in with a lot more questions for our RE now. I am definitely more hesitant to transfer 2 if they make it to blast, so we will see.

    Thanks again for your feedback!

  • We transferred one at day 5, and are pregnant with one. This was our first IVF, and we have four frosties. This is what our RE recommended, and although we weren't adverse to having twins, our RE had concerns about avoiding multiples if possible. Our issues were MFI related, if that makes a difference.

  • Hi there, I think you need to take into account how your embies are doing on transfer day. I would worry about twins with high blood pressure. Talk to your RE and go over all the risks and be comfortable with your decision.

I transferred 4 and one finally stuck! But I'm also AMA and have a million other problems resulting in implantation failure.

Good luck to you and hope to see you back here for good really soon!!!

  • Our thought was if its a 50/50 chance we are putting in 2 to double our chance! :o)

I know it does not work like that, but we did 2, fully planning and ready for 2 or 3 or 4, never know what can happen, and we are pregnant with a prefect little baby!

Started TTC in 2006, LOTS of trying, and trying, and 7 rounds of IVF with 13 embryos, 2 perfect little boys and 5 loses....
All finished with babies, started to make diet changes, Keto, to be MORE for my kids, lost 30 pounds, still going, and 3 months in, I had a natural cycle, and then ovulated... Hubs and I are going to see what happens now... Maybe a natural pregnancy? After everything we have been through? Or just a return to normal hormones? We shall see what the future holds!

  • We knew going in we were high risk due to kidney disease, and my RE refused to transfer more than 1. Our first cycle we transferred 1 on day 3 and it failed. The second time we transferred 1 hatched blast on day 6 and she stuck. If I can be honest, transferring 1 was the absolute best decision for us. The pregnancy hasn't been easy for me, especially now that I'm so close to delivery, and I am certain with 2 it would have been more difficult.

I have been following you words, and I was around when you got your BFP. You are one strong lady!! Thanks for your insight. I know I will be high risk as well, so the more I think about it the more likely I will not be transferring 2 if they are both high quality. I am going to ask my RE what is best. Thanks so much!

  • Here are my IVF transfer stats -

1st transfer (fresh) - 2 day 3 embryos, one very good quality and one good quality = BFN

2nd transfer (frozen)  - 3 day 3 embryos, all lost cells in freezing/thawing, ranged from good to fair quality = BFN

3rd transfer (frozen) - 1 day 3 embryo, fair quality (only embryo to survive thawing) = BFN

4th transfer (fresh) - 2 day 5 blastocysts, one early blast (too compacted to grade) and one ok quality expanded blast = BFP with twins

I think it depends a lot on what your embryo quality is like and whether the embryos are day 3 or day 5. I do think on a first IVF transfer, you generally want to be more conservative in how many you transfer. If you are doing a day 5 transfer and have one great blast available to transfer, I'd transfer just one. If it is a day 5 transfer with suboptimal embryos or a day 3 transfer, I think transferring 2 is reasonable. Sending lots of good vibes your way for a successful IVF!

ETA: I was 27 when we got our BFP and I am 28 now. Our dx is more or less unexplained.

    IUIs #1-3 (1x unmedicated, 2x Clomid) = 2 BFNs, 1 m/c at 7w3d
    IUIs #4-6 (injects) = 3 BFNs
    IVF #1 = BFN
    FET #1 = BFN
