Anyone have GERD?

Although it is one of my only pregnancy symptoms, it's killing me! ?GERD is when the acids of your stomach creep up in your?esophagus, causing you to choke. ?It's mostly because the stomach has been pushed up and has very little room and the sphincter does not block the acid from rising up. ?Anyway, I wake up at least three times a night from choking. ?It burns and tastes awful! ?I've tried taking Tums and Zantac, but nothing seems to help. ?I've also tried to not eat too close to bed, drinking milk, and raising my head with lots of pillows. ?It's really starting to hurt my sleep. ?Anyone have a similar situation and advice? ?TIA!

Re: Anyone have GERD?

  • I have had it before getting pg and it is beyond worse now. I am on zantac 150 2x a day and it just takes the edge off. It sucks but it seems like you are doing everything right. Just make sure you are avoiding all the trigger foods too  but I think for the most part we just need to wait it out until baby gets here.

  • Carbs, milk and anything with fat is like adding fuel to the acid production fire. Even skim milk is not 100% fat free.

The ONLY milk that is 100% FF is Pur Milk from Whole Foods. Is the Zantac from your OB? It will be a different strength.

I have GERD as does my Mom.

  • My LC at the breastfeeding class used that term when someone asked about colic in babies. She said these days most are diagnosed as having GERD and not colic. I hadn't heard of it before, but I guess it's related to what you're talking about. Sounds awful for an adult, let alone a baby!

  • My husband has it and he has to take Prilosec but I don't know if it is ok to take while pregnant.
  • I have it and can't take anything for it other than Tums because I'm on meds for hypothyroidism. Don't drink milk! It makes it worse. I just avoid all things acidic (when I'm being good, that is)- no tomato sauce, no oj, no vinegar, etc. Also, eat smaller meals 5 times a day and at least 3 hours before bed.

Like I said, when I'm good, it works well. When I'm bad, I really pay for it. Which has been the majority of the pregnancy! Embarrassed

  • Yes...I had it mildly before getting pregnant and it was HORRIBLE throughout the first tri.  I had to see a specialist for it and he put me on Prilosec.  It has really been the only thing that has controlled it.  I tried to stop taking it a few weeks ago, but the GERD just came back in full force.  I totally sympathize...it's brutal. You have to "play around" to see what your trigger foods are.  Mine are tomatoes, garlic, onions and chocolate (with chocolate being the absolute worst).  It's been hard to not eat chocolate all pregnancy, but when I think about hos it makes me feel and that nasty taste...it makes me not want to eat it anyway.  I am fine with milk, actually.  I just can't eat or drink anything within 2 hours of laying down and I try to go for a walk after meals.
