C-sections

can you choose your meds?

that they give you during and after the csection?

after my first csection I was so OUT OF IT, I want to be more present next time, do they always give a specified med after the procedure?  Was I loopy because of the anesthesia?

I will obviously ask my ob when I am pregnant again, just curious about others experiences.  I started just motrin a few days afterwards, so I am most curious about the first days.

Re: can you choose your meds?

  • I had a spinal and magnisium (because of pre-e) during my c-section.

I don't remember what they gave me in the IV after the c-section.  I was a little out of it- but I was unable to see my guys anyway since they were almost 6 weeks early and went straight to the NICU.

When I was able to take pills, I asked for some other than Vicoden after.  I get super sick on vicoden- so they gave me Darvocet.

I sort of asked a similar question earlier -- the post about Percocet. I honestly feel like narcotics make me depressed. I honestly wouldn't feel safe functioning alone with a baby on narcotics again. I feel awful admitting that, but it's true. My guy is a SAHD now, and when we first had our baby, he was a student who worked part-time, and when he went back to school after I had our LO, I spent a lot of days alone at home just crying, and I really think it was the meds. When I had my wisdom teeth out, I had vicodin, and I acted the exact same way.

If I ever have another LO, I'll definitely ask my doctor what other options there are.

  • I hope so.  I had duramorph in the spinal and I'm going to ask if I can not have it if I have to have another c-section.  I seriously hate narcotic pain killers and I would rather be in terrible pain than on them, so I want the absolute minimal/no pain relief if possible.  The whole "stay on top of your pain meds" theory did NOT work for me and made me feel worse so I learned my lesson the first time.  Pain I can deal with and understand; the drugs do not make me feel any better.

This was me! I was SO out of it after my c/s. I felt as if I was in a fog. And to this day it really bothers me. I think it was the morphine that made me so loopy and itchy. I don't know if I would ever be able to choose my anesthesia meds though.

  • I don't know what I had in my IV either, but I was never the slightest bit out of it.  My complaints were feeling like I was freezing cold and shaking with itching later, so I'm going to talk to my OB and the anesthesiologist about that.  After the recovery room, all I remember taking was Motrin and was fine.  I took a total of 3 prescription pain pills throughout my recovery and otherwise was good with Motrin.

To the PP who made the comment about Percocet, I had a similar reaction to it when I needed it for a cyst I had years before pregnancy.  I would be in the middle of a sentence and just start crying for no real reason.  I would also realize that my sentences weren't making sense, so I stopped taking that as soon as I could handle the pain.

  • YES YOU CAN!  I met with my Dr this time around since it was scheduled and talked about the medications that I was on last time and how they made me feel.  I have drug allergies that are newer than my last csection and I needed to steer clear of those one for nausea issues and the other for loopiness.  I was so glad that i did.

  • My friend did. I have no idea what she took, but she had different meds.

  • You should have the opportunity to talk with the anesthesiologist about it before the c-section and they can modify accordingly.

  • If I need another c/s in the future, I will be talking to my doctor and anesthesiologist about medications for sure. I had no issues with the Percocet or ibuprofen, but they gave me some kind of slow-release morphine during and immediately after surgery that I hated. It made me very dizzy and woozy for a good 24 hours after the surgery. When the nurses tried to get me up to walk 12 hours after surgery, I got about 20 feet down the hall before they stopped me in my tracks, plopped me in a wheelchair ad brought me back to my room. I had mentioned that I was woozy and apparently I had gone white and they thought I was about to pass out. Id really like to avoid that scenario if possible.

  • Like others said, you should be able to talk to the anesthesiologist or dr. I'm actually going to make sure they give me the same thing this time! I was a little itchy, but was never loopy or out of it at all. I was actually surprised after I had my c/s to find out how many people get so loopy because I felt 100% coherent. She ended up putting something in my IV for nausea during the c/s, but I never vomited.

  • I was a bit drowsy in recovery but after the shock of the c/s was much more alert.  I definitely wouldn't call it out of it.  So I would ask for something different or at least tell them how you felt last time.  Sometimes they just give you too much or too strong.  I know they gave me special meds because I was BFing.  The thing is you just have to know about it to ask.  Like I didn't know they'd give me 2 freaking bags of pit after the c/s.  I would've had a lot to say about that had I know ahead of time!

This exactly.  I requested, and was granted a meeting with a rep. from the anesthesia group prior to my c/s.  My concerns were 1) my Epilepsy, and 2) feeling coherent.  I had the Durmorf and Percosets also and all went well, not loopy at all.

I did have a friend who, after having a c/s was so drugged that she didn't even remember the first two days.  I don't know her details, but that was very sad to me.

  • I refused to take anything stronger than Motrin because narcotics make me very ill and I couldn't imagine vomitting after an abdominal surgery. The nurses constantly asked me if I was sure I didn't want something stronger, but I stuck to my guns and the pain was bearable with the motrin and I felt better than I would have on something stronger

  • I'd run it by your OB and see if you can work something out. I am allergic to morphine, so my OB set up a consult with the anaesthetist beforehand with no problems. They were able to change up their "normal" procedures for something that worked for me.
