Is it normal to get lots of ultrasounds?

I went in the first time on Monday, at six weeks. No ultrasounds or anything, just a pee test, blood pressure, and discussion. They said they normally just do the ultrasound near 20 weeks if you have a normal pregnancy, but that at my 10 week appointment they would search for the heartbeat.

Anyone else in this position? I don't really care because I guess I do have a normal typical pregnancy (no risk factors, no history of loss), and in general I think health care spending is out of control in this country precisely because of people like me demanding ultrasounds, but I am a bit jealous.

  • I will not be seeing my dr until 11 weeks. I will get an ultrasound then and then at 20 weeks for gender and then at around 32 weeks for growth. I am so ready to see the baby. The local college does ultrasounds for 10 dollars. I am trying to keep myself from going there to see everything before my appt.

  • I think normal is 2 times. If there is a medical reason to do more they will. I had to have several at the end of my first pregnancy because she was breech.

This. Also, if you have medical issues or a history of loss, you may get more u/s done. But I think 2 is the norm.

  • Awe!  I really was looking forward to at least an ultra sound or a heart beat on my first appointment at nearly 8 weeks!  Does this mean that they won't be doing any of it!  I can barely wait!

  • Standard for my OB office is 2.  One at 8-10wks and the other at 18-22wks.  I'll be switching at some point though.

  • I don't have anything scheduled yet because I just got my bfp today and haven't called my midwife yet.

With my first pregnancy, I had one ultrasound at 12 weeks and one at 20 weeks.  I had PIH with that pregnancy so around week 36 I stared having NST's twice a week and once a week they checked the AFI with u/s.

With my second pregnancy I had one at 20 weeks and another a week or so later because they couldn't see all the chambers of my son's heart in the position he was in.

  • No, it's not normal. Last time I had quite a few but they were all necessary. This time I am having my first one at 7 weeks but I just had a m/c so I think that's why.

  • With DD I had one at 10 wks, nt scan at 12ish, anatomy scan at 20, position check at 34ish. I am not going in this time until 12 wks and will do the nt scan right after.

  • I go in at 8 weeks for my first appointment and get an u/s to confirm pregnancy. With my last 2 pregnancies my OB also has done one at 12 weeks (however this time since I am AMA I will go for an NST scan which includes an ultrasound)  I then have a 20 week growth u/s - so 3 total.  My sister-in-law only gets one u/s sound at 20 weeks though.  It's what her practice does, I guess everywhere is different.

  • I will be getting weekly ones up to ten weeks, but that's just because we did ivf. I'm pretty sure of I just went to my OB the first one would be at 20 weeks. Ugh, what a wait!

  • My office's norm is 2 (the dating u/s and anatomy scan). I ended up getting several due to complications last time.
  • At my 8 week appt, my dr will be doing an ultrasound, blood work and family history.  From reading a lot of posts on here it seems like each doctor is very different on when they schedule appts and do u/s

  • When I was pregnant with my son, I had three utlrasounds.  One at 8 weeks to confirm EDD; one at 20weeks; and one around 33 weeks.  For these ultrasounds, I had to go to the hospital because my OB's office didn't perform them.

I am at a new OB for this pregnancy, and I have heard that they do utlrasounds more frequently because they have an ultrasound machine in every patient room.

  • I had 3 with DS, due date check, anatomy scan & growth ultrasound at 34 weeks for my gestestational diabetes.

With DD I had 9. I had possible placenta previa, gestational diabetes and a traumatic fall at 27 weeks to add to the normal mix.

Normally my OB only does one for the anatomy scan at 20 weeks.

  • With my first pregnancy, they did a 'dating ultrasound' at 8 weeks just to make sure we were on track and baby had a heartbeat.  I had another ultrasound at 12 weeks because they couldn't find the heartbeat with the doppler (baby had stopped growing at about 9 weeks and no longer had a heartbeat).  We would have had another one at 20 weeks if pregnancy had continued healthy.

My sister-in-law had an u/s at 12 weeks and for insurance reasons, were not allowed to have another one unless medically necessary which meant no a/s at 20 weeks.  Each practice is different!

  • Every Ob is different at mine I get one at 8-9 weeks for measurement and due date and another and 19-20 for gender and organ check.. No third unless medically necessary
  • My doc generally does two one at 20 weeks and one around 34 weeks for growth.  I have more becuase I was seeing an RE when I got preg with DD so lots of US.  Then she had IUGR so I got lots to keep track of her growth.  Then I had lots with DS becuase we had to make sure he wasn't getting IUGR too.  And will be monitored the same with this baby.  Also I have a prior loss.
