How does one handle taxes for a nanny?

I have a potential nanny for A (if I can find someone to nanny share with me... in southwest Austin... anyone?  Bueller?)

If this works out, I am going to have a ton of questions as to how to go about setting it up.

First:

How do taxes work when paying a nanny?

That's a big change! Exciting, right? Just for the summer, or forever?

I don't even know!  I have her on the list for a spot at a downtown church but it's not til September, so it would be at least until then.  But, if I loved it, then I'd be open to forever.

  • Taytee and I use Breedlove to deal with the taxes.  I can't speak to it from the employer standpoint, but it's awesome from my perspective.

  • I do it myself (using the breedlove calculators) and then make an excel paycheck.  You can withhold or not withhold (up to you and your nanny).  Then I do the W2 online and pay the taxes owed with my federal return.  TX unemployment taxes are quarterly and I pay those online too.
  • All my families used Breedlove.
  • Are you looking for someone to nanny share immediately? I'm southwest and considering my childcare options right now. I would be interested, but won't need someone until August...

  • Now that I think about it, my boss might be interested in a nanny share. She lives SW and her son will be 2 in March. I think her childcare situation has been pretty unstructured from the get-go (with dad one day, with someone else another day, someone else the next, etc.) and she'd like to get something more consistent. If you don't find anyone else, page me and I'm happy to ask her.

    I am.  :(

  • 1) One of my friends is desperate to find a nanny share & she lives SW! The issue is her work schedule. She works full days W-F. Let me know if you want me to put you in touch with her.

    2) Our accountant handles our nanny-related taxes/fees (IRS & TWC). Check out the Breedlove website, though. From what I remember, it has some good info.

No problem, I knew figured that was the case. Just thought I'd ask.

  • Signing up for BreedLove was super easy and I've been really happy with their website and service. My 2 favorite parts about it are Direct Deposit (not having to remember cash or a check!) and having the paystubs online to use for my Childcare Flex Spending Account. I'm just not financially savy enough to do it myself. I mean I could, but I usually operate on about half the sleep of a normal person so it's a divide and conquer kind of thing. They do my taxes and pay Kiarox, then the milk ends up back in the fridge instead of in the pantry. I figure that alone saves me $20 a month ;)

  • It got way to confusing for us so we just got a CPA to do it... Cost $250, best money ive spent!
