The LESS important V-day

We've all reached the important V-day by now (YAY!!!) so with the less important V-day coming up, lets get some discussion going on this board.  What are your Valentine plans?

DH and I have only celebrated V-day once since we've been together (our 1st together).  Since then, neither of us has been a big fan of it.  I worked in a fine dining restaurant for 4 years after college, so I couldn't stand it.  We usually do just a dinner at home together or go to a restaurant that isn't popular for Valentine's Day.

As for gifts, we usually don't do anything except this year we decided to book a 3D/4D ultrasound.. so I guess that's what we're giving each other.

Even though we're kinda V-day scrooges, I still like hearing other's plans... so go :)

Re: The LESS important V-day

  • We'll do what we've done since we started dating: cook a fancy dinner at home. I HATE having "romantic" meals with 100 other people in a restaurant on Valentine's day. This way we can put T to bed and then have a nice dinner.

  • We always do Cheesecake Factory for lunch, then get cheesecake to take home and enjoy later.  We've been doing it for... wow, 4 or 5 years now so we'll continue it.  We don't exchange gifts but do buy cards.
  • We're also kind of "V-day scrooges". We used to get our taxes done on V-day (but now I do it myself)! I'm a bit of a tightwad I guess, meaning I think it's a big waste for my DH to buy me flowers. But this year he's surprised me with some chocolate dipped strawberries! I ruined the surprised by noticing it come across our online bank account LOL. I'm very excited for them to arrive...perfect present for a pregnant lady! I think this year, we are going to rent the movie Courageous and just have together time once the kiddos are in bed.

I hear ya!  And restaurants ALWAYS overbook so even with reservations, there's always a wait.  And there's so much more volume in the restaurants than normal, so I feel like even at good places, the food is never as good as going on a non-holiday.

  • My husband's a fantastic cook, so usually he makes us a nice meal at home and we get each other small gifts. Our anniversary is in March, so I'd rather make a big deal out of that instead of Valentine's Day.

But this year he'll have his MBA class all evening and won't get home til 9:30 :( I'll probably make him a dessert or something.

  • No plans yet.  This will be our first Married V-Day, but I don't really feel up to doing anything.  I kind of want to invite some single friends over for a movie night since some of our friends have gone through some brutal break ups in the past year.  I think it'd be fun to get their minds off of it and DH and I don't have to do anything special.  - On the flip side, our last V-day without a munchkin, should I give that up?

  • We have never went out to eat at a restaurant.  Usually one of us cooks a really nice dinner and we hang out at home.  We dine out often enough, and would rather do it when there aren't crowds, and "special" ($$$$) menus.

This year, due to costly car repairs that sprang up, I told him not to spend a bunch of money on me.  We had so much fun shopping for funny "Dirty Santa" gifts at Big Lots this past Christmas, I thought it would be fun if we separately went to Big Lots to purchase Valentine's Day gifts for each other!  $10 limit.  There's NO TELLING what funny stuff we'll come up with!

  • My birthday is on the 24th so I told him not to get me a present for Valentine's and lets just go somewhere nice for my birthday. I am not a fan of going out on VDay either. I did get him a card though. We are saving all of our pennies for the baby. I would rather have something baby related than flowers.

  • We are going to a lecture at the local zoo on animal mating! They do this event every year and it's dinner, cocktails, and the lecture. It's not necessarily romantic but it looks like a lot of fun!
  • We're going to the Melting Pot :)

  • We're doing nothing since we can't see each other until I visit the weekend after. Hopefully he has something up his sleeve though! Smile

  • I'm doing a fondue dinner for my husband. This is our first being married and our last (for a while) as just the two of us. DH loves cheese and chocolate, so I'm going to make a cheese fondue appetizer and a chocolate fondue dessert, and then make a simple entree of clams and angel hair pasta in a white wine sauce (don't worry, the alcohol will cook out). I ordered a real fondue pot from Amazon yesterday for the cheese course and I'm pretty excited to try something new. And I'll probably buy him an outfit for baby related to V-day that we can use next year.

  • We never go out to eat on Vday-- too crowded, and DH has to work that night, so we will celebrate at home the night before.  We'll cook a nice meal and have some "us" time. We booked a 3d ultrasound for that day as well, so that's our gift to each other, and of course we'll get each other cards.  I may get him something small to go along with the card, but I don't have anything in mind right now.

  • DH usually cooks for us on Valentine's day. This year our awesome sitter volunteered to watch DD for free, so we plan to have an early dinner at home, then go see a movie.

  • We usually order pizza (sometimes heart shaped : ) and don't exchange gifts.  This year I found out that he got me a small $15 gift, but I will probably still just get him a card.

  • I don't get to V day until tomorrow but anyway, I'm not sure what we are doing for Valentine's Day. Usually we go to dinner together a few days before or after to avoid the crowds. We usually get each other cards but no gifts.

  • We don't generally celebrate Valentine's Day. But I think we're going to this year since we haven't been able to sneak off and having alone time due to school and then a pregnancy.

We're planning to ship DS off to my parent's for the night. It works perfect because SO has no class until the following afternoon and DS is pre-school free for the day.

We're planning to have a night-in. No movies planned yet. We've talked tentatively about making a steak dinner (rare for us), some yummy asparagus, and we're up in the air about any other sides at the moment. I'm thinking some sparkling cider is in order. Also, I want to get some fresh strawberries. We had a fun time dipping them together on our last couple's night away.

Then of course, sexy time is on the nightly agenda (although maybe it should be before I'm stuffed and possibly having heartburn). I doubt we'll exchange gifts or cards.

  • DH and I have our anniversary the day after V-Day, so we avoid doing too much for V-Day so we can go all out for our anniversary.

This year we are relaxing and having a spa day together. After we are having dinner at Cheesecake Factory, then coming home for alone time. :)

We always exchange cheesy gifts every year though just for laughs and to be cute. Last year I got a white stuffed dog with hearts all over it, the standard choclates, a card, etc.

I am interested to see what I get this year.

  • DH and I have never celebrated Valentines Day....because my birthday is the 15th and his it the 16th :p  So we focus on the birthdays instead :)  This year we're going out to dinner with friends on Friday, dinner with my fam on Saturday and lunch with his fam on Sunday...busy weekend!!

  • We usually go out to eat "for" Valentine's Day but never on the day itself bc restaurants are so crazy - for us it's just an excuse to go out to eat lol.  H usually gets me a gift but i'm a bad wife and never get him anything (and I always tell him not to get me anything) because I think it's such a Hallmark holiday and my birthday is right before it anyway. This year he got me a really pretty amethyst ring for it before I said "no gifts" (he got it around Christmas time when it was on sale lol) and so he has already given that to me as part of my birthday gift.

Anyway - on the actual day we'll probably have a nice meal at home and he'll have a glass of wine.  Big plans. lol.
