C-sections

update: should i let doc turn baby

Well, yesterday we went in, the baby hadn't budged, but my fluid levels were too low and I wound up being monitored for three hours. Doc said there wasn't enough fluid to move him even if we wanted to.  But his heart for the most part did extremely well and he bounced around the whole time. Now I am on bed rest and hydrating as much as I can. I go back on Friday to see how he is doing again and then we go from there. A turn is still an option if the afi scan on Friday shows good levels.

The baby is face up as if trying to peek through my belly button, it was pretty cute to have a face staring back at us as we checked on him.

Thank you everybody for your opinions, it is comforting to see I'm not the only one on the fence and it helps to hear successful experiences.

Re: update: should i let doc turn baby

  • Just wanted to share that my breech baby decided to turn on its own.  Sending a prayer to you that your baby does the same.  We chose not to do the version, mainly b/c my doctors wouldn't do it, they refer you to doctors at a hospital down in the city (not at all where I would want to have my baby if an emergency-c became necessary).  I went in for an ultrasound yesterday, 2 days before my scheduled-c, and found out baby is head down.  I hope all goes well for you and your LO.

  • Thank you. i am laying in bed and drinking fluids/eating fruits. hydrating away so he can choose whats best for him until the doctor weighs in on Friday.
  • I did in preparation for my ECV as well. My AFI went from 8 to 16 in 2 days. Chug, chug, chug! Lol.

    Good luck mama!

Congratulations! Are you going to deliver vaginally?

That's the plan as long as everything goes well.  At least I took the time to learn about what to expect if I do end up needing a c-section for whatever reason.

  • Just wanted to share my story because I was in a similar situation.  My DD (11 months now) was breech.  Like a PP,  my doc does not do versions because we are at a somewhat rural hospital.    We checked her position multiple times prior to the c-section and my kiddo just wouldn't turn.  Turns out, my kiddo was breech because of some hip issues and a version would definitely have resulted in an emergency c-section.  I don't say that to scare you, but just wanted to let you know that a version is not no-risk, especially if you are not a large urban hospital.  My water broke before my scheduled c-section, so I ended up having kiddo earlier any way, but she got to cook 2 weeks longer than if I had had the version and had the c-section then.
  • I came on this board to post another question, but I saw your post. I had an ECV that ended up being an emergency c-section. As soon as he flipped, the cord went around his neck, and his vitals plummetted. I had no idea what had happened. I was even joking with my doctors while I was on the table.

All at once, they were yelling for the nurses to scrub up, and they put an oxygen mask on me and said, "You're having your baby now."

He was out about four minutes later. At my hospital, they do an epidural with the ECV in case this happens. It was the scariest moment of my life, but we both came out okay. My little guy turned 10 months old just this last Saturday.

I live in a rural area where there is no such thing as VBACs, so at least I know I'll be going in for a scheduled C-section if I have another LO. That seems less scary than the emergency C I went through the first time.

    I'll be thinking of you!

goodness, i am glad you are both ok. i guess the most frustrating aspect is wanting to do the right thing, but without experience to go on I feel a bit lost. the low fluid thing has made it harder as well. i'm glad you two are healthy and happy, and thank you for your thoughts!

This,  they flipped DD and ended up wrapping the cord around her neck in which made things alot worse and ended in a emergency c-section.

  • I hope he does turn!  Everyone, even the dr, told me DD could turn even as late as while I was in labor.  I had just started doing exercises that were supposed to help.  But I now feel such regret I didn't do more and sooner.  It's the only reason I had to go through a c/s.
