We are going to start rice cereal soon. I have a food processor, but have seen many places that people use a coffee grinder. Has anyone had luck with a food processor or should I invest in a coffee grinder? Thanks!
i just bought a baby food cookbook that included instructions on making your own cereal. she might include what tools work best in her instructions. i'll try to remember to look tonight and if i do i will update this for you

I have no experience with making rice cereal, but just in thinking about my food processor, I doubt it would be really effective for grinding rice. A coffee grinder would undoubtedly work better.
I'm more curious why you've decided to make your own rice cereal. Is it just to save money, or do you not like that the store-bought stuff is enriched, or you keep organic or something else? I'm not trying to put you on the spot or being judgy or anything, I'm honestly just curious.
I'm planning to make DD's food once she's on purees, and we're actually hoping to skip over baby cereals entirely. But our pedi has already said that if DD's weight gain isn't back where it should be by next week's appointment, she's going to want her on some cereal, and I'm fine with that if the pedi says that she NEEDS it. But I'm just going to buy it - I feel like it's such a short stage (at least I hope it will be for us), so I'm not going to bother grinding rice or oat or anything like that.
One of the reasons cereals are encouraged is for the iron, vitamins that are added. Does your recipe account for this? I would be interested to learn more about this. Granted, rice is not one I would be giving for a long time as it is constipating, but perhaps you have a recipe for oatmeal.
Really it is just becuase I love to cook and bake. I plan on making all her food and figured I'd start with this. I suppose it doesn't hurt that in most cases it is cheaper and better for her.
Some babies don't like rice cereal (like mine). Personally, if I were you I would buy a small box to see if your LO even likes it before you go to the expense of buying an appliance to make your own.
If you do decide to make your own, I know the Baby Bullet has a rice miller attachment, because I have it but haven't ever used it! Have fun with solids! DD loves hers (except for the rice).
Honestly the box of organic rice cereal was like $1.50 and once that box is gone (probably even before the box is gone) we are going to be doing regular foods anyways. Doesn't seem worth the trouble to me...
That is awesome, im going to do the same when she is ready around 6months. I would assume it would work best to grind the rice before a bullet would work ( i think) cook it and add breast milk then back in a bullet once its all cooked, maybe a bit of trial and error. You try before baby does until its right texture. Good for you with making it your self!
I made my own rice cereal. I did grind up the rice in a food processor and it worked just fine. I actually used a magic bullet. I also used brown rice, which is better for baby then the white rice you buy in the box from the store. I froze it in ice cube trays, and now I just get it out of the freezer and pop it in the microwave. 2 cups of rice powder will go a long way. Congrats to you for making your own baby food! :-)
