How did you handle...

How did you handle taking away the pacifier. My DD is 18 month and I am done with her using the pacifier. Today I cut the tip off of just one and she is currently in her crib crying because she wants it so bad. I don't know who we are going to get through this... WWYD?

Re: How did you handle...

  • we tried the tip-cutting thing with DD1 and although she was confused and kind of heartbroken that her binky was "broken!" she took it anyway...so that didn't exactly work...we had to cold turkey it one weekend and although the first night was pretty hard, the second was much better and the third was smooth sailing! good luck!

  • DS was never really a fan of his pacifier, so we just sorta lucked out.

I'd cut back to just naps/night then cut back to night. then to nothing.

  • Daycare did it for me.  She pulled it right out of his mouth the morning he got there and never gave it back to him.

  • I just asked Hudson if he was a big boy.  He would nod his head yes.  Then I told him that big boys don't suck on Binkies.  I told him that we had to throw binks away.  We only gave him the binky when he was really really sick and needed something to comfort him.

I am happy to report the last time he was sick, I went to give him his binky and he looked at me and threw it on the ground.  I asked him if he was throwing binks away and he nodded his head yes.  Anytime it was handed to him, he threw it on the ground.

In all reality, we went cold turkey.  He didn't seem to miss it much and now his vocabulary is so much better.  Good luck!  I thought it was going to be the worst hell on earth getting rid of the thing, but I was pleasantly surprised.

  • DS was never interested in a pacifier, so DH and I lucked out on that one! But my brother and I loved our pacifiers and my mother said the only way she could get rid of it was just cold turkey. It seems to be the best way among my friends with children as well.
