How do you pronounce Elias?

Okay so I love the name Elias. Tonight DH said this name and pronounced it completely different than I have been. I have been saying EE-lee-us and DH said Eh-LIE-us. Not sure I wrote that phonetically.

Anyway, I see this name often on here and have a FB friend who named her son this, but I have never heard it said aloud. How do you say it?

  • Eh LIE us...close to how you'd say Elijah
  • I say eh-LIE-us, I guess. That's how everyone I knew pronounced Elias Big Boy when I lived in MI. Not that I trust that it was correct, however.

I grew up in MI too, but I've only ever heard it pronounced ee-LIE-us.

Is your DH a hockey fan?  If so, it could explain his different pronunciation.  There is a hockey player on the NJ Devils named Patrik Elias (he's from the Czech Reepublic) and his last name is pronounced very similar to how your DH is apparently saying it.

  • Very interesting question! I was always curious on the same...

From my own research (because I wasam also considering it)

Elias is the 'spanish' version of Elijah.  and in spanish , it is pronounced,

    "e -lee-as".  Its nice....

But I'm glad to hear the feedback here because I was curious to how people would pronounce it in 'english'...:)

  • My friend just named her son this, and they call him Eli, pronounced ee-lie, so they pronounce the full name ee-lie-us. Before, though, I had always said it eh-lie-us.
  • I used to pronounce it Eh-lie-us (like the beginning of Elijah), but my cousin's named her son this and they use the Greek pronunciation which is Eel-Ee-Us, so that's how I say it now.
