Baby Names

Is this just me?

I have this weird thing when it comes to names, I dont like Jr's or seconds or any one in the family having the same name  or the first Initial the same.

My husband is Christopher, I'm Lauren and our son is Tyler.... so that means that we cant have another child with a TL or a C.  Or The same First Initial as our last name. We have a D last name so D's are out! and I kind of feel the same about my side of the family, so S,K,R and M would be out too! hahah I'm nuts!

I Made this rule years ago, but I sort want to go back on it LOL

Re: Is this just me?

  • I don't like Jr.'s or seconds either, but I don't mind family members having the same first or middle name or the same first intial. But I think everyone is entitled to their own naming guidelines. Smile
  • I don't see what the big deal is with family members having a common first initial, personally.  My name is Lesley and our girl name had DS been a DD was Lia.  I thought it was cute that we had the same initials.

ETA: I just noticed that you don't even want LO to have the same initial as your side of the family either.  I think that's a little extreme, not to mention stressful to put that many restrictions on yourself!

  • I'm not a fan of juniors either. As for the first letter of a name, I don't stress that.  I think if you find a name you love, use it, regardless of the first letter.

  • I see what you're saying but I wouldn't go out of my way to avoid same first letters. If a name I liked began with an A (my first letter) or a K (H's first letter), I wouldn't avoid it. I dislike letter themes though so if I like another name just as much, I'd rather use that.

As for Jrs and IIs etc. - I agree. I really dislike naming people after another person. I don't mind honoring someone in the middle name, but I don't like giving the same FN.

Not weird rules but you might be taking them a bit far.

Please don't go as far as restricting yourself according to family letters as well - this is taking it way too far and might become stressful. Also, you can't control who comes next - what about when a sibling of yours has a child? What if they use a letter you've already used? Will that bother you? I think you can relax these rules a bit....

  • I'm the same way- I like names to have a variety of sounds.  I don't like matchy sibsets or family initials (example: Duggars).  I don't mind when people name their kids after family members, but I personally wouldn't do it.  I want my kids to have a name that is uniquely theirs and special/different from their parents and siblings.
  • I think you're over-thinking it.

  • Sounds a bit extreme to me but there's nothing wrong with this theory.

  • thanks ladies, I guess I just like to make sure every one is an individual, and make sure no one ever left out. example, my aunt, uncle, and boy cousin all have J names, and my girl cousin has an R name and she always felt left out.  Our children will have our middle names as their middle names though, Michael and Nicole.
