C-sections

Pain management after spinal

I'm about to have my rcs on the 22nd. My first one was under general anesthesia. I remember waking up in crazy pain. I was then in same crazy pain for the next 12 hrs or so until they started giving me percocets. I know the first 12 hrs they were pumping in pitocin and very minor doze of morphine for pain. So my question is..is the pain management any better when you have a spinal or is there also a certain amount of time where you're in a lot of pain?

Re: Pain management after spinal

  • My pain was very well managed. I would ask your OB what their protocol is.

  • My pain was fine. However, I was throwing up a ton. (I tend to have this reaction to anesthesia, though) I was nauseous and vomiting for about 8 hours. But the pain was ok!

  • I had epi last time, but I never felt pain after my c-section.  It was very well managed, and I didn't have to take anything once I was home.  I hope things will go the same way this time around too...

  • I did not want to take narcotics because I was breastfeeding but I did have duramorph in my spinal.  It lasted about 24 hours and I had really good pain control but I was itching like a mad woman (a side effect of morphine).  This time, I'd actually rather be in excruciating and debilitating pain because I know it only lasts a week or so.  But bottom line, if you want pain management, there are a number of ways to control the pain.

  • I know they had a pain med with my spinal (not sure exactly what it was, but I don't believe it was morphine.)  I didn't have any extra pain meds for the first day and I didn't feel much pain.  Wore off probably before 24 hours.  I think it's pretty common for them to push a pain med in w/ the spinal, but you might want to double check w/ your hospital.

  • While I don't know what they had in my IV when it was still in, after my c-section I really didn't have much pain- only soreness.  I regularly took the Motrin the nurses brought in, but I really didn't need the prescription meds.  I believe I took the script meds on 3 occasions- once when I was going to remove the tape from the staples (afraid it would hurt), getting the staples taken out at my OB's office (assumed that would hurt) and once when I overdid it a little walking around shopping my first afternoon out and about after delivery.

  • My spinal didn't work well.  It took longer than expected to kick in and wore off in the OR.  Percosets definitely helped and do not let yourself get off schedule with them!  My hospital does pain management on demand (they only give you something if you ask for it).  They were also giving me rx ibuprofen and I don't even remember what all else.  But with those bags of pit going in I felt awful.  I was begging for whatever I could get.  They couldn't give me anything else by IV or mouth so they started giving me shots of demerol, which they warned would hurt because it's usually given IV.  Really the best advice is do not forget to take the meds especially in the first 24 hours.  After I got caught up with guests, forgot to ask for the pills and started hurting bad it took me that long just to get comfortable again.

  • I had morphine in my spinal, which lasted probably the first 24 hours. I personally think that's it's silly to try and play superhero and decline pain meds after you've had MAJOR abdominal surgery. My hospital gave meds on demand and I was miserable the first 2 days. Then I had a nurse who gave them timed and it was WONDERFUL. I finally felt well enough to start to function like a human again.

This. I had an epi not a spinal but my pain was very well managed. The epi didn't work very well and I could feel a lot of sharp pinching so after baby came out they actually gave me a lot of IV drugs. I don't remember the first twelve house. Sadley I slept most of it. But the next morning I was in no pain at all.
