Tylenol question.....

I have had the flu for the past 24 hours and am scared that I am taking too much Tylenol!!  I've been trying to stick with 2 every 4 hours but I feel like some of the doses may have been too close together. Am I just being paranoid?  Or should I be worried?

Re: Tylenol question.....

  • My answer might be a little different just because I'm a guidance counselor but I would say to stop immediately. Maybe try a warm bath or do something relaxing instead. Overdosing can lead to liver damage and could be potentially fatal.

Sorry if I'm overreacting a little :/ Hope you feel better!

  • two what every 4 hours? What is the dose you're taking? Taking too much Tylenol can cause liver damage, but you're going to have to go a lot heavier than you're doing to cause liver damage in 24 hours! I would say try to space the Tylenol out a little more. (Stick with the lower end of the dosing instead of the higher end.) What are your symptoms? There are some great non-medicinal options for relief.
  • Intense nausea, achy,my biggest problem is that I've had a migraine through out that just won't go away. I've been taking 2 pills every 4 hours. This is my first pregnancy so I'm constantly afraid I'm hurting the baby!

:/ Try some saltine crackers. And for the migraine lay a cold rag across your forehead.

  • Have yu gone to yur doctor he/she should be able to help yu

  • Here's the thing - if the Tylenol hasn't helped your headache with several doses, it's unlikely taking more is going to do any good so I'd probably stop taking it.  Are you well hydrated?  Have you tried some caffeine?

  • Have you tried sitting in a steamy room, in the dark? You could drag some pillows into the bathroom and lie down on the floor with the lights out. Turn your shower on as hot as it will go and try to relax all of your muscles. I find that if I focus on the muscles in my face, the rest of my body follows. I'm always surprised at how much tension is in my face.

For the nausea, bland foods. (The brat diet) and stay hydrated. That's the most important part. If you can get your hands on some Gatorade that's really good. It can help keep your electrolytes in balance while you can't keep solid foods down. How long have you had the flu? All the symptoms you've listed can be normal pregnancy symptoms and if they drag on there are things your doctor can do to help. If it's been longer than a few days that you've felt this way, call him up. Also, if you can't keep down anything (including liquids) that merits an immediate call to your doctor. Dehydration can be dangerous for both you and the baby.

  • If you're mostly having stomach issues, it's most likely not the flu--it's a stomach bug. The flu is actually a respiratory ailment, and it's terrifying. Most people jump to "flu" if they're experiencing stomach trouble along with other aches and issues, but that's not always it.

Tylenol is safe, but I'm not sure about several doses. At the very least make sure you're not exceeding the dosage guidelines on the bottle. Yes, a tylenol overdose can do very bad things, but it's going to take more than several pills to do any damage (two pills every 4 hours won't cause an overdose; maybe there'd be some damage if you did it every 4 hours for weeks on end)... however, since you're pregnant, I'd be pretty careful.

You probably should call your doctor especially if your headache hasn't subsided after a couple doses or just to get a doctor's opinion on how much to take and how often to take it.

The Tylenol may actually be giving you more nausea, especially if you aren't taking it with food. Like a PP said, if it hasn't helped you yet, it isn't likely to help you now. I don't know if you actually have the flu, it just sounds like a migraine to me. Try taking a little caffeine, stay hydrated and stay in the dark. If you can, go to bed. Sometimes it helps to keep your head elevated (sitting up a bit while laying down). When I lay down all the way when I have a migraine, it just gets worse (oddly enough!)

Hope you feel better! I'm sure the baby is fine - just rest!

  • okay seriously, you're not going to overdose by following the directions on the bottle.  granted, if it's not helping then try something else.  i agree with what other posters have said about it being most likely pregnancy symptoms wrapped around a possible migraine.  it irritates me to no end (not saying you're irritating me ;) when people immediately jump to saying they have the flu.  if you really had the flu, as a pregnant woman, you would be under constant doctor supervision.  my brother-in-law had the flu a couple of years ago when my sister was pregnant and her OB made her move to my parents house and only go over periodically to check on him (my mom did most of the nursing) because she didn't want her catching the flu.  he was wracked with severe body aches, high fever, respiratory issues, chills, and vomiting.  he was a wreck for three weeks.

    so...

with that said take a deep breath and let it out.  try the dark steam room, cold compress on the head, back of neck, and some chamomile/mint tea.  you'll be okay and if you're truly worried about the tylenol, call your OB.  only they can truly tell you what to do.  good luck!

  • Ginger tea, a little caffeine, lay in a dark room and do deep breathing, eat ice cream or a Popsicle - I read it has to do with the nerve that gives you an ice cream headache but it helps migrianes.

  • I'm a pharmacist, so you can trust what I am about to say...you're fine!!! Tylenol is one of the only meds, aside from prenatals, that is going to be ok to take while pregnant.  Stay clear of aspirin and ibuprofen and you'll be fine!!
