Umbilical Hernia and Abdominal Muscles

If your LO has an umbilical hernia do they have trouble with their abdominal muscles (i.e. tummy time and sitting)?    Owen still only has the skills of a 2/3 month old even with therapy three times a month and us doing the exercises twice a day.  No one seems overly concerned yet but it only makes sense that these two things might be related since there is a lack of abdominal muscle.

Re: Umbilical Hernia and Abdominal Muscles

  • No, a normal umbilical hernia shouldn't affect his muscles. The muscles are intact. The defect is in the fascia which lies between the muscles. Henry has a hernia and is rolling and generally advanced in gross motor. He's a not advanced at all in fine motor (using his hands). I think all babies (even term babies) have their strengths and weaknesses- it sounds like you are doing everything you can and if his therapists, etc. aren't concerned, I wouldn't worry too much!
