Multiples

When did you find out it was multiples?

I'm 6 weeks along with this pregnancy, and dd is almost 2. I'm hoping for twins! My maternal grandmother had 4 sets of twins and dh has twins on his side too. Just wondering when during your pregnancy you found out it was twins or more? Any thing I can watch for??

Re: When did you find out it was multiples?

  • I had fertility treatments so my first sign of multiples was a very high beta number on day 14 (mine was around 230's) so my doctor suspected multiples, but it wasn't confirmed until I had and ultrasound at 6 weeks. The doctor's office actually missed the second baby on the 5 week ultrasound (thought it was a shadow instead). I also had horrible morning sickness starting at 4 1/2 weeks. Good luck to you on your pregnancy! The only sure way to diagnose really is the ultrasound.

  • I just found out yesterday at 12 weeks via ultrasound.  My doctor said now my horrible m/s and high weight loss made sense.  Oy.

  • I was on fertility meds so I knew there was a chance.  I found out at my first ultrasound, 5w4d.  No other symptoms.  Morning sickness started hardcore at 6 weeks, worse than my other two pregnancies.

You know who says this?  People who don't have twins!

Seriously, a twin pregnancy is high risk - many of the ladies on this board had/have difficult pregnancies and babies born very early.  Those of us who didn't feel very fortunate.

Because the teacher in me can't help it, whether your DH has twins on his side of the family doesn't matter - fraternal twins run in families on the mother's side.  Identical twins don't run in families, the just show up.

Good luck with your pregnancy.  To answer your question, I had an ultrasound at 7 weeks due to spotting and we discovered there were two!

Yes...the U/S. Mine showed two sacs and two heartbeats at 5w6d. That is the only sign that will show you that you're having twins.

    GL with your pregnancy!

Ditto all of this... We transferred two via FET, had earlier + HPTs, betas twice as high as w/one, confirmed by u/s @ 6w. See siggie details for the fun of twin complications. Hope you don't have them.

  • We saw three sacs at 6 weeks, three heartbeats at 7, and they are all still there.  Who knows if I'll be able to take them all home, I sure hope so but this pregnancy is no joke.  It's hard, I'm exhausted, I'm likely to be taken out of work weeks before my babies arrive using up all of my generous STD and pregnancy leave and then I'll have to hope that we can make ends meet until I'm ready to return to work (or come back when I'm not ready) and see what it's like as a new family of six.

  • 10w6d at my first u/s.  Since u/s is only way to confirm a multiple pregnancy, that is going to be the anwser you receive.  Just curious why you are so hoping for twins?  Just a fair warning that comments and questions like this get a major side eye on here, from myself included...
  • We had no reason to expect or suspect twins. We got pregnant on the first cycle we tried. Found out there were two at 11 weeks via ultrasound.

Even though my H has twins in his family, as PP said, the father's heredity doesn't factor in. Since ours our fraternal, it means I ovulated twice and each egg was fertilized. I could in theory pass hyper ovulation to my daughter and my son could pass it along to his daughter, if it was even a trait to pass along. It could have been a random occurrence of two eggs being released and may never happen again.

  • We found out at 5w2d. The doctor suspected twins because we transferred two embryos during IVF and my beta at 9dp5dt (the equivalent of 14dpo) was 452, two days later it was 1,026. He told us it was likely twins but the only way to know for sure is via u/s. As PPs said, what you can watch for is a second baby on the u/s.

  • I was 7 weeks when I went to do an intake meeting with a nurse. I asked her if it was normal for me to be wearing maternity pants already (first baby) she said they would schedule an u/s for the following week just to make sure I wasn't farther along then I thought I was.  So at 8 weeks we found out there were twins.  FWIW, I took a home pregnancy test SIX days early and got a positive result....that's when I started wondering. :)  You really won't know until you have an u/s.  Good luck!

  • My OB's practice does a routine 8-week transvaginal U/S so we found out then. We had fraternal twins, too, in the family so I wasn't shocked it was twins--just shocked they were identical, which are not genetic!

I think in terms of symptoms it's hard to tell. One of my good friends has morning sickness way worse than I did and she's having a singleton. GL!

  • did IVF, transferred two embryos, had high betas...saw two sacs on screen at around 5 weeks.  if you didn't do IVF or use fertility treatments, aren't having regular betas checked, and aren't having an early ultrasound, there aren't symptoms that will tell you that you are having twins ....

i also had a singleton pregnancy...no IVF, no betas...much more vomiting....

  • @ 8 weeks via ultrasound because I was having some bleeding. If you don't get an ultrasound before the 20th week NST scan, than usually your doctor might notice you measuring further along with the growth measure on the belly.. That's the only way I think you'll be able to really notice.

  • the father's side doesn't effect your likelyhood at all btw, but I found out at 7 weeks. I had spotting at 6 weeks and they couldn't find a fetal pole at the ER, so a week later my doctor did another ultrasound and found 2 heartbeats. =)

  • A couple of days after my BFP when my DH told me! I was so sick with m/s that he said "there must be 2 in there!"

All joking aside, 7 weeks. We had a confirmation u/s since I had a prior m/c and we saw 1 sac with a thin membrane in between with 2 beans inside, each with a healthy h/b.

Congrats on your pregnancy, whether it be with or without multiples. But you won't know for sure until your first u/s.
