A question for experienced moms

At my 20 week ultrasound they found a calcium deposit or EIF on the babys heart. It was the only marker found, and the dr. didn't seem to worried about it. But the more I research its a marker for DS, if found with other markers. Everything else was normal and they baby measured about a week bigger. He didn't schedule a follow up or anything, and pretty much just blamed the technology these days. Should I be worried at all? I am just looking for some encouragement and I am pretty nervous now. Thanks!

  • Have you considered an amnio?

  • Not to be rude but everyone on this board has had an outcome that you don't want to hear. My 4 year old had a calcium deposit on his heart when we had his ultrasound.  A few weeks later it was gone. He has a genetic syndrome called 16p11.2 duplication.  My 6 year olds had no markers on their ultrasounds. One of my boys has autism and learning disabilities and my other guy has global developmental delays.  I know people who have had soft markers and their children are fine.

  • From my recollection, if you only have one of the soft markers they don't generally recommend further testing.  They call them "soft" markers because sometimes they mean something and sometimes they don't.  If your doc wasn't too worried, I'd try not to worry too.  But keep in mind, even if you have no markers at all, that doesn't mean that your kiddo won't have any issues.  My DD1 had no markers, we had great numbers coming out of the 1st trimester genetic screening, and she has a microdeletion syndrome.  It's just hard to tell.  For now, try to stay excited about that beautiful baby you're going to have.  If you're really nervous and you find you can't relax about it, talk to your doc about doing an amnio.  Good luck and congrats on kiddo #2!

    exacta-mundo.

I hope everything turns out fine. If not, I guess you know where to find us. :P

    Seriously though, good luck.

We are trying to save you extra worry. You already mentioned in your post that you were nervous and worried. No one around here wants your worry to increase based on our unique experiences. My mantra is to worry about something when you HAVE to. Good Luck again.

  • The EIF on the heart is no big deal. My doc told us that 10% of completely typical kids will show this. It is a soft marker for Down's but in and of itself not something to worry about. My son had this at a 15 week ultrasound, and he does not have DS (he has ASD but that is unrelated). Don't worry!
