S/O Sick babies - preventative measures?

Gracie had a virus twice last month that caused extremely high fever and a lot of overall sickness. Both times she got sick, she had gone to  l o c o m o t i o n jumpy gym two days before. Coincidence? Maybe, but I still put a ban on my parents taking her there for a while. I hate doing that b/c she loves it there so much and my parents love taking her there equally as much. I just can't help but feel like they don't clean those places enough. I'm not sure what the state regulations are on them, but seriously, how much is a teenage worker going to sanitize a giant inflatable or a tub full of balls? Not so much I imagine.

We always carry hand sanitizer and use it several times during and always after playing. I always give her a good bath in the evening after she goes to wash her of all the germs. Are there any other preventative measures other parents are taking? Or is avoidance of those types of places more common than I think?

  • You know, I think you just have to let their little immune systems toughen up.  My kids got sick every time we went to the Children's Museum down there.  I stopped going because, really, who wants a sick kid?  But then, we moved up here and had really limited options for entertaining them (and me), so I kept taking them to the gym day care despite the fact they caught about 10 colds in the first month there.  Now, though?  They seem really resistant to the germs - just last week some kid barfed on the table between A & V, and turned out to have a fever of 103, and they didn't catch a thing.

I guess what I'm saying is I wouldn't worry too much, and I think that with time, she'll be better able to fight off the germs.  JMO, obvi.

ETA: I still scrub their hands with hand sanitizer the second we step out of the joint, though.  Just so you don't think I've totally lost it.  But I've stopped making them change clothes the second we walk in the door.  ;)

  • Nutrition. Immune boosting foods. We hit the big bounce, museums, parks etc every week and my kids barely ever get sick. If they do, it's minor, we hit the chiro for an immune boost, juice some veggies, eat some bone broth and it's gone. Food is the best medicine and preventative there is.

    Eta: we don't use sanitizer.

  • Not sure I have any answers for you but studies have shown that, contrary to popular belief, hand sanitizers can actually make the immune system worse because your body actually needs those germs in order to build immunity to them. A simple hand wash with non antibacterial soap is best.

Other than that, I do try to nurish their bodies with healthy foods and lots of water. I wouldn't say it's a cure, by any means, but I feel it does help.

  • I agree with carlinlp.  I am religious about vitamins for DS and me.  DS gets his vitamin everyday (nutrition would be better but hey; we'll get there one of these days).  DS hasn't been out sick from school in over a year. He still get's a cold or maybe it's allergies but no fever.

  • Probiotics / fermented foods are key too.

Betcha two years ago if someone had shown you this sentence and said it would come from you, you would have laughed in their face. Wink

It's amazing how much you can learn and grown in such a relatively short time!

Me, crunchy.....ppppppffffft.  I'd have laughed right off my chair. I'm the least likely crunchy momma in the history of ever.  But it works.  Feels like a lifetime ago that my kids were always sick.  I don't miss it at all and kick myself regularly for allowing it to go on for so long unnecessarily.  It's easier to eat right than it is to have sick kids all the time =)
