If it's right for your child and you believe in the premise (I do), it builds self-esteem, independence, and an intrinsic love of learning vs relying on extrinsic rewards such as grades, praise, awards, etc. Children also learn how to learn independently more than in a regular classroom. Kids learn at their own pace and own interests, which means they usually learn more, but can be an adjustment back to regular public school.
I would echo all of the above and add that they have the ability to work at their own level and to go beyond the normal expectations for their age group. There are no limits to their learning. There is a lot of accountability. I do worry a bit that it is all learning all the time -- not a whole lot of play time during her day other than the playground. But I try to let her just have fun and play at home -- I'm not the mom whipping out the flash cards on the weekend unless she initiates.
