Rear facing/forward facing CS & CP

Jay is still rear facing. But SIL told me she turned her DD's carseat forward facing right away because she was crying everything they put her in the car. This question is different than the CP but If you LO cried everytime you put them in the car would you also turn it around?

I think I would live with it and keep them RF.

Re: Rear facing/forward facing CS & CP

  • No I wouldn't, but neither of my kids cry in the car seats. My own personal opinion is that it is just an excuse for people to forward face as soon as their kid is 1 year old. When DS turned 2 and we turned him FF he was more irritable because he could see what we were doing and wanted us to hold him, play with him, etc.

I don't understand why people get so anxious to turn their babies FF. I never had any desire to do it, but we were constantly pressured by family to turn them around so they'll enjoy the ride more, etc. silly...

My family is always saying similar things. But I think he enjoys the car ride rear facing more. He still sleep in the car, but if he were forward facing I do not think he would. That is actually one thing I am not looking forward to.

  • We just turned her FF tonight and I am a little anxious about it. EVERYTIME we went to put her in the car she would use her legs and the back seat to push herself up to stand. She would then stiffen up like a board and it would take like 5 minutes to get her to sit down. She screams while we were doing it and it was miserable for the both of us. I am a little hesitant to keep her that way but it is honestly what works best for us at this moment.

  • DD1 will be rear facing until we install DD2's infant seat. We plan on putting her seat FF behind the driver and the infant seat RF facing behind the passenger. Technically we could keep her RF, but DH sleeps in the car a lot at work and would ideally like to be able to recline his seat. She'll be about 16 months at that point.

  • E goes through phases where she'll scream bloody murder the entire time then a week or 2 later be fine for a while.  Even if she screamed every time, I would rather hear her scream knowing she's safe than have to hear her scream because she was severely injured FF, or not be able to scream at all.  A friend of mine turned her daughter at 14 months because "She just enjoys it so much more now and everyone else does", she was only 18 pounds at the time too.  I wanted to throat punch her. I have to admit, I didn't feel this strongly about it until a couple months ago when Valley showed me those crash test videos and then I did some more research on my own, but now nothing is convincing me to switch until 2 years.

Those videos were intense and if I would have watched those to begin with I would have never even thought about turning him around early.

  • Right now she is rear facing. BUT there's no room for a passenger in the front seat of my car which means we can barely use the car so we've been thinking of switching it anyway. If she cried constantly every time I put her in I would probably switch her. The stress and distraction from the crying is probably less safe than having her face forward.

  • We are still rear-facing.  I plan to as long as possible - even beyond 2yo if it works out.  DH was anxious to turn Joshua around so he asked the pediatrician about it which setteld that disagreement.

  • Alex is still RF. We switched our older daughter to FF when she was a year old. *in 2009, they rec 1 year/20lbs* She was a bigger infant at 25lbs at 1 year and very long. Alex is much smaller, so she'll be fine back there staring at the back of the car. :) I plan on flipping her around when her legs start to cross due to them being too long.

  • I would not flip my LO forward if she cried. Both my kids are RF still, even my 2 year old who is height wise closer to the size of a 3 1/2 year old (38 in).

With that being said, I get why some people have to at 1. A friend of mine had her LO get carsick RF and she commutes with her an hour a day in the car. I think if I had a long commute and LO was screaming nonstop and nothing I tried worked (like a mirror in the backseat/toys/a music cd in the car) I would flip too.

I do think it's crappy when people switch at 1 without waiting to see if LO will grow out of the fussing or try to find ways to entertain LO while RF.

  • I still have JT RF and plan to keep him that way as long as I can get away with it, even though DH complains that he has to ride in the dashboard when we take my truck!!
