Cian

We really like the name Cian, do you think we would run into a lot of pronunciation issues?

ie people reading See-an vs Kee-an

I much prefer this spelling over the more anglicized Kian or Keane but would love to hear others feedback.

Re: Cian

  • I have no idea how to say this and I'm not going to guess.

I think you may have pronunciation issues with idiots like me.

  • Is Kee-an the correct pronunciation?  That would have been my fifth or sixth guess at best.
  • One of my students is named Cian. It is pronounced Kee-an.

  • I LOVE this name. It's pronounced Kee-an, with a hard 'C' just like Ciaran, Cillian, Ciara, etc. I too prefer this spelling to the anglicised 'K'.

  • My first thought would be to pronounce this name Kigh-Ann. Perhaps maybe Kee-Ann...if you want the named to be pronounced Keane, then spell it that way.

Sorry if that seems harsh, but Cian =/= Keane. Sorry :(

This 100%. C is normally 'soft' when it's in front of an 'i', so most people will pronounce it as such.

  • My favorite boy name, but I prefer it spelled Kian.

It's pronounced like Ian with a K sound in front.

  • I know a little boy with this name and he pronounces it with a hard C.  But, if I hadn't seen the name before I might assume it's a soft C.

I would also pronounce it this way.

    I like this name.

  • I'm probably in the minority, I'm familiar with the name and it's pronounced Kee-an. South of the border you might have a harder time, but it's pretty easy to correct people. If Keira had been a boy, we had Ian, Cian and Ciaran on the list. We only used the K for Keira because after running the name past some people, they kept trying to pronounce Ciara see-air-ah. I still prefer the traditional C spelling on these names.
  • My friend has a son named Cian and rarely has problems with people mispronouncing it. I like the name.

This is how I would pronounce it too.  I would probably continue to mess it up to since it isn't pronounced intuitively.

Same. I follow the rules of phonics when reading and spelling. I did not know it was pronounced the way OP wanted it to be pronounced.

  • I think you will have pronunciation issues, but it's not a hard name to pronounce once you learn the correct pronunciation. I wouldn't let the potential issues keep you from using it.
